University of Chicago Free e-book for October is Veggies!

Eat your Veggies. Or rather, …read your veggies! The University of Chicago free e-book for October 2017 is the 128-page 2012 e-book “Vegetables: A Biography” by Evelyne Bloch-Dano, translated by Teresa Lavender Fagan.

You have to give them your email address to get this free e-book. This book also uses Adobe DRM, so you either need the Adobe DRM satanic software on your computer or an iOS/Android app that is compatible with that nonsense.

The book (in all its formats) has just three customer reviews at amazon.com with an average of 3.9 out of 5.

Speaking of free ebooks, if you are a Prime member, don’t forget to scoop up your October 2017 freebie. As previous months, you can get one out of six pre-release options for FREE!

Kindle First October 2017 options are up!

Prime members, your hard dollars at work! Good until October 31st in 2017, you can pick up one FREE pre-release e-book from a choice of six options as part of the Kindle First program. If you are not a Prime member, you can purchase one of the six for $2 and read it right away. If you need more than one, Prime or not, you have to wait until November 1st 2017 when all six of them will be released.

The October 2017 choices are:

  • “A Tangled Mercy: A Novel” by Joy Jordan-Lake in the … “Book Club” genre
  • “The House by the River” by Lena Manta, Gail Holst-Warhaft in Family Dramas
  • “Mark of Fire (The Endarian Prophecy Book 1)” by Richard Phillips in Fantasy
  • “The Unremembered Girl: A Novel” by Eliza Maxwell in Suspense
  • “The Extraditionist (A Benn Bluestone Thriller Book 1)” by Todd Merer in Legal Thrillers

As usual, there is no rush to pick up one right away. Since they are pre-release books, they don’t have reviews out of the gate. So you can wait for a couple of weeks until they get useful review profile. You have until 10/31/17 at 11:59pm to pick from these!

Limited Time TOR DRM-free eBook Giveaway: “Envy of Angels” by Mark Wallce

If you like FREE and also DRM-FREE, you are in luck! Good until Friday 9/29/17 at 12pm ET, TOR is giving away DRM-free ebook copies (ePUB, mobi) of Mark Wallace’s “Envy of Angels” fantasy/supernatural book as part of their e-newsletter subscriber promotions.

To get the free e-book, you have to give them your email address. Downloading the free e-book is easy, you just press the button in the link they direct you to. You can get both the ePUB and the MOBI or one of the two options.

If you are not familiar with this book, it is book #1 in a series of five and it has a 4.3 out of 5 rating based on 69 customer reviews at amazon.com.

The first books of long book series are frequently featured in giveaways for obvious reasons. The authors and publishers want us to get hooked in their world and keep reading and buying 🙂

20% off CBS All Access Subscription for 3 months

If you are ready to jump on the all new “Star Trek Discovery” bandwagon, and you missed out previous opportunities for a 2-week or better free trial on the “with commercials” plan, we have some alternatives for you!

Currently most options, such as Web Browser sign-up, Roku and Android (Google Play) only offer a 1-week free trial on the Limited Commercials plan ($6/month), and no free trial on the $10/month plan which has fewer commercials than the Limited Commercials plan, but it’s not ad-free like Netflix. Yeah, live to the Old Media to find a way to twist “no ads” into meaning “fewer ads”. Bastards!

GOOGLE PLAY

One option for a discount is to sign up through Google Play using discounted Google Play gift cards. Pay for the subscription using your gift card balance, not a credit card. So the discount you find on the gift cards, is the effective discount you would get on the CBS All Access monthly subscription.

APPLE TV

If you have an Apple TV, some people are reporting that they are offered a 30-day free trial through that. I don’t have an Apple TV to verify that.

WEB BROWSER COUPON DISCOUNT

Another option if you are signing up with a web browser is to use coupon code FALLACCESS which is a 20% off discount during your first three months of service.

Sadly the coupon does not work on Google Play ~ which would have been an opportunity to stack the discounts.

PREPAID DISCOUNTED ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION

If you are totally sold on the CBS All Access concept they also sell prepaid annual plans with a built-in discount. Keep in mind however that they only have three original shows:

  • Star Trek Discovery and its Talk Show
  • The Good Fight (Good Wife spin-off)
  • Big Brother extras
  • that’s it, nothing else exclusive

They have a lot of CBS content, and offer additional ways to watch that CBS content. So if you are a fan of CBS TV in general, or some of their older TV shows (they have a library of many things), along with a handful of movies (“Defiance” perhaps the most recognizable).

Earthseed: The Complete Series for $2 (ebook)

The complete “Earthseed” series by acclaimed speculative fiction author Octavia E. Butler is composed of the two “Parable” books in the series, a total of 880 pages, and you can get them all as one e-book, for the bargain price of just $2 for the Kindle. The book averages 4.3 out of 5 based on 29 customer reviews.

Pre-order Season 2 of Shannara Chronicles for $10 in HD

For a limited time only, you can pre-order Season 2 of The Shannara Chronicles in HD and without ads, for just $10 at Amazon Instant Video. That’s the whole season. You will get the episodes as they become available. Season 2 has not began yet.

Season 2 of the TV series, based on the Terry Brooks long-standing book series, will begin October 11 in 2017 according to epguides.

One unusual thing about this TV show is that season 1 was running on MTV, but for season 2, the TV show is moving to Spike TV, which has been making some noise about moving towards more scifi and fantasy type of content.

This is a limited time promotion, but I do not know when it expires. It may be an introductory offer because of the potential confusion created with the transition from MTV to Spike.

Free Cooking Class and Vudu Credit among T-Mobile 9/19/17 Tuesday Freebies

It’s all about media on the Tuesday 9/19/17 T-Mobile Tuesday. An all-time favorite is returning, the $5.50 Vudu store credit, which, during the promotional period, you can use to buy and rent any combination of movies and TV shows. You can use the promo credit on one or multiple (eg rent five 99c movies). This is different from the FandangoNOW offer which can only be used on one item even if that item is 99c.

The other good thing is a MasterChef online class and accompanying e-cookbook. This is the first time this offer has been with the Tuesdays, so I do not know any more details on what it is or how it works.

The other two offers are very meh coupons, some hotel thing, and even more meh, restaurant.com nonsense. We do not mince words here 🙂
