Peets B&M: Buy any Barista-made Drink, Optionally Buy Bottled Cold Brew for $2

Peet’s Coffee (under the ownership of the big coffee conglomerate) is taking a more interesting path with their Peetniks Rewards program. Not only are they having the conventional rewards, but they also have regular Special Offers that appear in the Mailbox of their app and are also sent to you by email (if you are subscribed to those).

Running at the moment are two offers for their brick and mortar stores.

The first expires Sunday night (9/3/17), and gets you a FREE drink of any kind when you purchase any coffee or tea MUG or Tumbler. This is not a bad deal, because some of their classic “city” coffee mugs go for $6. Some of the more fancy drinks are close to $6, especially with customization 🙂

The second offer just went live, and runs until 9/14/17. If you buy any handmade drink (made by their baristas, not a pre-made bottled drink), then you have the option to purchase one of their bottled cold brews for just $2. Their cold brews are not cheap, so if you wanted to try them anyway, and you were planning to get a barista-made drink anyway, this is a good opportunity to buy them.

REWARDS STRATEGY

You still earn a check-in reward. Every 15 check-ins, you earn a reward. Assuming you use your reward for a $6 drink (the largest version available for your favorite fancy drink), then you can place a value on 40c on every checkin ($6 divided by 15).

So if you plan on staying in at the coffee shop, strategically, you may want to split your order if you are buying more than one item. First get your drink, and then a few minutes later get a pastry or whatever else you want. That gets you two check-ins instead of one 🙂

Starbucks used to do this with their rewards, you earned stars based on the number of transactions, not the purchase value. I wonder if Peets will eventually discover (through number crunching and such) that this may be more beneficial to them.

On the other hand, since they just launched their rewards program, this way may encourage people to stick around longer and buy more things 🙂
