AMEX Blue Preferred Twitter Offer: 10% back on Amazon (up to $200 or 6 mos)

Twitter too is a good place to find deals, case in point, among the various annoying sponsored tweets, you may actually find something useful. American Express is running a Blue Preferred Card promotion that in addition to the regular cashback rewards, you receive 10% back on Amazon purchases, up to $200 in Rewards (= up to $2000 in purchases) or for the next six months, whichever happens first. This is great for the holiday shopping season since most people spend a lot more during that time. In addition, you may be able to qualify for $250 back when you make $1000+ in purchases within the first three months.

NOTE that the Blue PREFERRED has a $95 annual fee. As much as you may find annual fees revolting, this is actually better than the regular no-annual fee AMEX Blue if you make an average of $265+ monthly purchases in groceries (or any other combination of bonus-percent category purchases).

This is because groceries are 3% with the default Blue. With this one, you get 6% (up to $6000 in purchases per year). So for the Preferred to be …preferable (sorry, I couldn’t resist), you need the extra 3% to be higher than $95 per year. Pull up the calculator, and the break even point is $3164 per year or $264 average per month. So if you spend more than that, you get more cashback with the Preferred even with the annual fee.

But you don’t just get more % rewards on groceries. You also get 3% on department stores and gas stations versus 2% with the no-fee Blue.

Transfer AMEX Points to Plenti Rewards, Get 50% More

For a limited time, the Plenti Rewards program is offering y’all an incentive to transfer your existing American Express Membership Points to Plenti with a 50% bonus. If you transfer 500 AMEX Points, you will receive 750 Plenti points while this promotion is running. Check your Plenti emails to see if you qualify for this promotion. They send it by email, I did not find it on their website.

Once you click through the email, it takes you to a page where you can calculate the numbers. Points must be transferred in 500 AMEX Rewards increments. They have a handy calculator there, as you can see, I entered 2000 AMEX Rewards points and it told me I would be getting 3000 Plenti points. The offer is good until 12/31/16.

plenti_amex_transfer_bonus2

Considering that it is not easy to directly convert AMEX Membership points to cash or cash-equivalents at a 1:1 ratio (even paying with them at AMEX has an unfavorable conversion ratio), being able to transfer them to Plenti with a 50% bonus is a big plus ASSUMING you have no problem spending the Plenti points at Rite Aid or Macy’s or Exxon-Mobil or any of the other places that participate in the program.

Remember, Plenti [explainer post] is run by American Express, which is why they are able to rearrange the point chairs 🙂

PS: this only works with actual Membership Points. It does not work with the Blue Cash program.

YMMV $25 off a $50+ Amazon purchase if you pay with American Express Membership Points

If you have an American Express credit card that is participating in the Membership Points, there’s a hot new promotion running at Amazon until 12/31/16 that gets you $25 off a purchase of $50+ of items sold and shipped by Amazon actual (not by marketplace sellers) IF you pay (at least partially) with your American Express Membership points.

You don’t even have to pay for the full order amount with AMEX points. You can select how many points you want to use. This is important because the exchange rate is not favorable. One AMEX Point is the equivalent of less than a penny.

If you have eligible credit cards in your account, you will see this offer while adding items to your shopping cart or advancing to the checkout page.

NOTE: this promotion is YMMV as it may be targeted to customers with AMEX Membership Points in their account and it may be further sub-targeted based on whatever factors Amazon’s computers use to decide to offer these things. I have no way of knowing how many people are eligible…

YMMV AMEX Offers: 5000 Membership Points on $299+ at Dell

If you have an American Express credit card that has Membership Points rewards (not the AMEX Blue that has cashback rewards), check your offers. You may be eligible for a new Dell offer as you can see in the screenshot below (View Larger):

dell_amex

If you spend $299+ at Dell.com by September 12 in 2016, you will receive 5,000 Membership points, which you can redeem for a $50 gift card at a number of national retailers and restaurants (those that offer 1:1 points to pennies exchange). Based on the text of the offer, you don’t have to make the $299+ purchase in a single transaction, so it can be cumulative. So you don’t have to do it with a PC purchase, it could be random accessories purchased over time.

Before all that happens, you have to add the offer to your card. This is easy, all you have to do is press the “Add to Card” button.

IMPORTANT: even though the offer expires 9/12/16, it doesn’t mean the sign-up will be offered in your account until then. If you think you are going to use it, you must “Add to Card” now. They often have a limited time of sign-ups, so the offer may no longer be available for sign-ups long before it expires.

YMMV: 10% back on Gas Purchases with AMEX

This is a YMMV promotion that may be available as part of the AMEX Offers. Of the two AMEX credit cards I have, only the AMEX Blue showed this promotion in my account, but there’s no guarantee that every Blue cardmember will be offered this promotion. So there’s a big YMMV. The easiest way to find out if you are eligible is to logon to your AMEX account and check the Offers section below the summary. If you are eligible, you should see something like this (screenshot below):

amex_10percent_back_gas_stations

Once you add the offer to your account, you have until the end of September 2016 to use it. You get 10% back every time you make a gas purchase until then. The maximum statement credit you’ll get from this promotion is $25, in other words $250 in gas purchases. This offer is stackable with the Plenti rewards program, so you’ll earn some points there too. I’m assuming it’s also stackable with the 2X Gas Earnings that’s a default feature of the AMEX Blue.

Once you add to your card, you also receive a nice confirmation email from AMEX (screenshot below):

AMEX Offers: $15 Back on $30+ Google Express

If you have an American Express credit card, login and check your AMEX Offers now! One hot offer rolling at the moment is a promotion that gets you a $15 statement credit when you make $30+ in Google Express purchases. You must first “Add to Card” the offer to activate on your account before making the purchase.

amex_google_express

Once activated for YOUR account, the promotion is good until 7/31/16. However, if it’s not activate, the option to activate it will likely not be available until the expiratin date. The options to activate them are typically limited time and limited quantity, they disappear faster than their expiration. To cut a long story short, if you see a potentially interesting offer, add it your AMEX account ASAP!

Once added to your card, you have until the expiration date to use it!

June 5-11: Buy $300+ AMEX Gift Cards, Get $20 back via Easy Rebate

If you are a fan of the Staples gift card EasyRebate promotions, we have good news for you! For the shopping week of June 5-11 in 2016, at participating Staples brick and mortar stores, you can get a $20 Staples Gift Card via EasyRebate (can be submitted online, no need to mail anything in) when you purchase $300+ in American Express gift cards.

spls_amex_giftcard_easy_rebate

These have activation fees, so generally they are best if you can get to $300 with either one or two (most likely) gift cards. These offers have a small but very loyal following so you may need to be there Sunday AM if you want to guarantee finding the gift cards in-stock for this promotion.

AMEX Offers: Get $10 Back on purchases at Big Lots and Orchard (YMMV)

AMEX Offers are by definition YMMV, since we don’t know if AMEX makes these offers available on every credit card account or a subset of the accounts. The easiest way to find out is to logon to your AMEX account and look at the Offers section below the “Recent Activity”.

Bubbling around at the moment are two pretty good offers if you like to make general purpose purchases, especially for homeowners. As you can see in the screenshot below…

amex_offers_biglots_orchard

… you get $10 back on a $40+ purchase at Orchard Supply Stores (or their website). Separately, you get $10 back as a statement credit on a $50+ purchase at Big Lots brick and mortar stores (not their website).

It is important to note that while the offers expire by the expiration date shown there, the window to sign up for the offer (the simple task of pressing the “Add to Card” button) is often smaller. Some of these offers have a limited number of activations, so if there’s an offer you may need, add it to your card as soon as you see it.

YMMV AMEX Offers: Spend $100+ at Staples.com, Get $25 Statement Credit

If you have an American Express credit card, among the latest wave of offers in the AMEX Offers section (after you login to your AMEX credit card account) is a nice promotion on Staples.com (website purchases, not in-store purchases). If you spend $100 or more, you will receive a $25 statement credit on your American Express credit card.

NOTE: this is a YMMV promotion since I have no way of knowing how AMEX customers are seeing this offer.

amex_Staples_100_25

Even though the promotion expires 6/19/16, you should activate it (clicking on the “Add to Card” over there) as soon as you can, because the activation period of the offers is often shorter and sometimes they have a limited time number of activations. But once you activate it, you have until 6/19/16 to use it.

There is a long paragraph with all the terms and conditions, so check those out before placing an order. Limit one per customer during this offer. If you have multiple cards on the same AMEX login, make sure you activate the offer on the card you intend to use.

YMMV: Earn 2x AMEX Points on Amazon Purchases

If you have an American Express credit card with Membership Points (not the Blue line of cards), they have a new promotion running under the “AMEX Offers” section that went live on March 22 in 2016. You earn 2X membership points on Amazon.com purchases made with the card. The promotion is good until 7/31/16.

You must manually opt-in to this promotion. Even though it expires in four months, the window to opt-in is typically small. In other words, if you don’t opt-in, the offer won’t be shown in your account for four months. In other words, if you think you may use it, add it to your card the next time you login to your account!

Screenshot of that with the important bits highlighted can be found right below:

AMEX Offers: Pay $10+ at Hulu, Get $10 Statement Credit

If you have an American Express credit card, logon to your account and check your latest offers. One of them making the rounds is a Hulu offer. If you spend $10+ at Hulu, you will get $10 back as a statement credit. Even though the offer has a long expiration date, the sign-up period for the offer is shorter. So if you think there is a possibility you will use it, add it to your account as soon as you see it. Once added to your account, then you have the posted deadlines to take advantage of it.

hulu_amex

If that offer doesn’t work out for you, or you are not offered, there are a few Hulu offers making the round at the Plenti rewards program as well.

Dec 6-12: Buy $300+ in Gift Cards, Get $20 Staples Gift Card via Easy Rebate

There’s a new twist in the Staples Gift Card Easy rebate promotion that will run from December 6-12 in 2015 at their brick and mortar stores. The buy $300+ in Gift cards and a get a $20 Staples Gift Card via Easy Rebate is back and this time all three major credit cards are participating: VISA, Mastercard and American Express.

staples_gift_card_promo_returns_all_three

I don’t recall seeing this offer before, so I don’t know if you have to get to $300+ with one kind (eg only VISA gift cards) or any combination. This offer is a money-maker if you can get to $300+ with two or one gift cards because of the unavoidable activation fees. With two gift cards ($200 + $100), you pay $13 activation fee but you receive a $20 gift card, so you end up with a $7 return on a $313 investment with a 1-month vesting period. Can your investment adviser guarantee such a return? 🙂

TIP #1: these sell out fairly quickly, so if you want a good chance of finding them, you may have to be there as early on Sunday as you can. There are some “professional shoppers” who buy multiple of these, even though it is limit one per customer. Grandma and Grandpa becomes very popular when extreme couponers want to use them as mail-in rebate participants!

TIP #2: Gift cards are not refundable, so make sure the items you get are eligible for the promotion and you won’t change your mind. While other rebate items (eg the various copy paper offers) can be returned if you change your mind or you accidentally get the wrong items, gift cards are not returnable. So pay extra attention to the terms and eligible options!

AMEX Offers: Spend $30+ at Exxon Mobil, Get $10 back

If you have an American Express credit card, logon to your account and check the special offers. One of the latest making the rounds is a promotion that gets you $10 back as a statement credit if you make a purchase of $30 or more at Exxon Mobil gas stations by 12/31/15. You have to manually add this offer to your credit card.

exxon_amex

Once added, this offer expires 12/31/15. However, if you don’t add it to your card, it can disappear from the available offers at any time. This is because of two restrictions: there is a limited number of sign-ups per offer, and the offers may also have a limited runtime of their own regardless of the sign-ups. So, to summarize, when you see an offer you may perhaps use in the future, add it to your AMEX card right away!

TIP
If you have multiple AMEX cards on the same account (in other words, the same login account), pay attention to which account number you add the offer. It will only work if you use the card with the offer on it. Otherwise, no luck and customer service won’t fix it for you.

Note also that a lot of the offers are only shown to a subset of their cardholders. So you won’t have available to you every single offer you see mentioned on the internet. How AMEX decides to offer what to who(m), I do not know, it’s probably part of their “secret sauce” targeting system.

Earn 500 Plenti points with AMEX’s Online Version of Shop Small

American Express is continuing their brick and mortar Small Business Saturday (11/28/15 this year), but that’s not all. Now that they launched their new Plenti rewards program, they have also expanded their Shop Small program with a second promotion.

shopsmall_online

If you shop online using the American Express Shop Small portal between 11/27 and 11/30 in 2015, you will earn 500 Plenti points. That’s the equivalent of $5 in redemption money. You obviously need a Plenti rewards account to do this. The online edition features a number of small(er) online vendors, such as Alibris, CafePress, Tanga, HayNeedle, and more.

AMEX is able to do this easily because their Plenti rewards program has an online shopping component, similar to the FatWallet cashback program, so they already have the technology to track purchases.

This offer is one time use per customer during this promotional period. If you were planning to shop at any of those retailers anyway, this is 500 bonus points!
