Samsung Book Deals choices for July 2017 are up

If you have Samsung hardware device that is participating in their lesser known “Book Deals” program (Samsung it survived the regular purge of Samsung’s never-ending stream of projects), and if you have installed the Kindle app from the actual Samsung app store (it has S-Pen support after all), then every month, either for the lifetime of your device or for a preset number of months, you can receive a free ebook every month from a choice of four.

Almost all these books are part of Kindle Unlimited, so they have lots and lots of reviews, which can help you device which one to get or which ones to avoid. This unlike Kindle First which offers pre-release ebooks, so you have to wait for a few days before they build up a review profile.

The choices for July 2017 are:

  • “Crow Hollow” by Michael Wallace
  • “The Gift” by Dave Donovan (alien invasion type)
  • “What doesn’t kill her” by Max Allan Collins
  • “Heart of a Highland Warrior” by Anita Clenney (romance)

Happy reading 🙂 I am leaning towards the “The Gift” because one can never read enough alien invasion stories 🙂

One more thing, once you get your freebie, a lot of these ebooks have an audiobook co-promotion. You can add the audiobook for $2 or so.

99c Fantasy eBook: “Half a King” by Joe Abercombie

If you like Norse and medieval-y type of fantasy books, Book #1 of the “Shattered Sea” trilogy by Joe Abercrombie is on sale for a limited time for 99c in the Amazon Kindle ebook format. All three books have “Half” in their title. Book #1 is “Half a Sea”. This is a completed trilogy, so you don’t have to wait for “Winds” 🙂

Once you buy the ebook, you have an option to buy the Audible audiobook for $7.49, so even if you prefer the audiobook, it is cheaper to buy the e-book first, and then add the audiobook. The crazy way Audible works 🙂 This is a 385 pager from Random House. So you are getting 3.85 pages per penny 🙂

It averages 4.2 out of 5 based on 700+ customer reviews. I haven’t read it but I just bought it, to add to my never-ending “To Read” list!

Kindle First Choices for July 2017 are up, pick 1 out of 6 as usual

It’s a new month, July 2017 is here! We are exactly at the half-way point towards New Year 2018! That’s right folks, time flies! This means, among many other things, a new selection of pre-release e-books have been loaded at the Kindle First page. As usual, Prime members get one FREE e-book from the choice of six, and you can read it right now.

All six e-books will be released August 1st, so if you like more than one, you can get them then. Almost all of these will be part of Kindle Unlimited, so if you are part of that program, you can read them for free when they get there.

So without further ado, here are the six options, one of which is a “Kindle in Motion” format which includes all kinds of multimedia but can still be read with ereaders (obviously without the features that require a touchscreen):

  • “Kings of Broken Things” by Theodore Wheeler in Literary Fiction
  • “A Beautiful Poison” by Lydia Kang in Historical Fiction
  • “Little Boy Lost” by J.D. Trafford in Thrillers
  • “Secondborn (Secondborn Series Book 1)” by Amy A. Bartol in Scifi
  • “Mrs. Saint and the Defectives: A Novel” by Julie Lawson Timmer in Contemporary Fiction
  • “The Sky Below: A True Story of Summits, Space, and Speed” by Scott Parazynski, Susy Flory in Memoirs – this is a “Kindle in Motion” multimedia format

Tor eBook Giveaway for June is Scalzi’s Old Man’s War

TOR (the publisher) has a monthly ebook freebie as well, but unlike Kindle First and the Samsung App Store freebie, it does not last the whole month. You usually have about a week to claim it once the giveaway goes live at the TOR ebook club page.

You have to enter your email and it is only available in US and Canada. You can then download the ebook for FREE without any DRM in the ePUB (almost everything else) and MOBI (Kindle devices). The book for June 2017 is a space-based science fiction classic, John Scalzi’s “Old Man’s War”. Get it! Even if you have the Kindle version, since this will let you read it anywhere DRM-free!

Samsung Books FREEbies for June 2017 are out

It is June 2017 now, so don’t forget to scoop up your latest Kindle First freebie if you are a Prime member. And if you have an eligible Samsung hardware device, AND you don’t object to downloading the Amazon Kindle app from the Samsung app store (it is S-Pen friendly), for the month of June 2017, you can get one of the following ebooks below for FREE!

Unlike Kindle First which offers pre-release e-books, Samsung’s Book Deals offer previously released ebooks that are almost always part of the Kindle Unlimited (KU) program. So if you have a KU subscription, you already have access to all four of these.

Since these ebooks are already out, they have a lot of reviews each, so you can use the reviews scores and text to decide ~ if none of them “sings” to you 🙂

Free University of Chicago eBook is now available!

A new month means more free ebooks are coming in. In addition to the previously mentioned Kindle First options, the University of Chicago monthly freebie is now up and running on their website. The book for June 2017 is “The Political Origins of Inequality: Why a More Equal World Is Better for Us All” written by Simon Reid-Henry. This was published in December 2015 and is 208 pages long.

Further down the page, they have a new coupon code, promo AD1611 gets you 20% off ebooks on their “Readers Catalog”.

NOTE that this is delivered by BiblioVault, and it is a DRM-ed e-book. You have to use an AdobeID to download it, which means downloading Adobe’s DRM crap. SAD!

KindleFirst choices for June 2017 are up: pick one of six as usual

Just like that, a new month has sneaked upon us, and that means, among many other things, that Prime members have a new selection of free pre-release e-books to pick from, as part of the Kindle First program.

So without further ado, here are the six choices for June 2017:

  • “Lost in Arcadia: A Novel” by Sean Gandert in Dystopian Fiction (because we always need more dystopia?)
  • “Wives of War” by Soraya M. Lane in Historical Fiction
  • “The Man of Legends” by Kenneth Johnson in Supernatural Thrillers
  • “Stillhouse Lake” in Psychological Thrillers by Rachel Caine
  • “The Man Who Could Be King: A Novel” by John Ripin Miller in Biographical Fiction
  • “Soho Dead (The Soho Series Book 1) by Greg Keen in Crime Fiction

None of the six “speaks to” right out of the bat, so I will wait a couple of weeks for customer reviews to pour in and use the reviews and overall scores as a guide 🙂

Samsung Book Deals for May 2017 are out (pick one from four)

Oops! I forgot to post this earlier in the month! The Samsung Book Deals for May 2017 are running, good until the last day of the month. As with before, you can pick one of the four available ebooks for FREE! Make sure the price shown is $0.00, otherwise you will be charged for it!

To get these, you need to have a Samsung hardware device that is eligible for this promotion, AND download the Kindle app from the Samsung app store (not GooglePLAY, not Amazon’s app store). The extra benefit of that app is that it is optimized for the S-Pen. Of note (no pun intended) if you have Samsung Galaxy Note phones and tablets 🙂

Some Samsung devices have this offer only for a limited time (eg 12 months after purchase), some devices are NOT eligible, while other devices are eligible for the lifetime of the device.

Regardless, all the ebooks offered through this are available through Kindle Unlimited as well, so you have another option to read them (if you are a KU subscriber that is).

My pick from this quartet was Drifters 🙂

The ebooks offered here are all previously released ebooks and they have plenty of reviews already in the Kindle store, so you can use a long list of reviews and ratings and comments to make your decision.

Samsung Book Deals is different from the Kindle First program which only offers pre-release ebooks (most of which ends up in Kindle Unlimited as well).

Free Tor eBook Giveway for May: Zones of Thought Series book #1

A new month does not just mean a new Kindle First ebooks (free for Prime members), it also means a new free ebook from publishing house Tor which specializes in SFF (call it fantasy, science fiction, speculative fiction).

Unlike Kindle First, the Tor freebies don’t have a preset date, and once they are active, you only have about one week to claim them. But you don’t have to be a Prime member (all you have to do is enter your email address), and you can get the book DRM-free in either (or both) ePUB and MOBI (for Kindle reading) ebook formats.

The May 2017 ebook choice is “A Fire Upon the Deep” by Vernon Vinge. You can grab it at the Tor eBook Giveaway page. It is over 600 pages, so it’s not like you are getting a novella. It’s a “real” book 🙂

This is the first in a series of four under the “Zones of Thought” banner. Multiparters are often favorites in giveaways, to get you hooked on the whole series 🙂 This book averages 4.1 out of 5 based on 520+ customer reviews at amazon.com.

Choices for May 2017 Kindle First are up (pick one of six for FREE as Prime member)

May 2017 is here, and if you are a Prime member, this means you can get another brand new pre-release e-book for FREE! If you are not a Prime member, you buy one of the choices below for $2. The rest will become available June 1st and most likely will all be in Kindle Unlimited, so if you are a member of that program, you can just wait until June 🙂

So without further delay, here are the Kindle First choices for May 1st until the end of day on the 31st:

  • “North Haven” by Sarah Moriarty in Contemporary Fiction
  • “The Lioness of Morocco” by Julia Drosten, Christiane Galvani in Historical Fiction
  • “The Great Passage” by Shion Miura, Juliet Winters Carpenter in Lit Fiction
  • “The Hundredth Queen (The Hundredth Queen Series Book 1)” by Emily R. King in Fantasy
  • “The First Word” by Isley Robson in Romance
  • “Dead Certain: A Novel” by Adam Mitzner in Psychological Thrillers (already hammered in the early reviews)

My pick for this month is…

Book #2 is already scheduled to come out in September 2017, so you don’t have to wait for it like “The Winds of Winter” 🙂

FREE: “Deathless” by Catherynne Valente (ends 4/16/17)

Unlike the Kindle First freebies that begin like clockwork on the first of every month, the Tor monthly e-book club is a bit more floating in time and space. I suppose it makes sense since they specialize in fantasy and scifi 🙂 Their April 2017 freebie, which you must needs claim by the end of day on April 16 (2017) is “Deathless” by Catherynne Valente.

As usual, you have to enter your email address at the eBook Club page and play the email ping-pong until you get a download link. Their freebies are DRM-free so you can load them on any device or app you want as long as it can read ePUB or MOBI. You can download or both of the formats. eBooks are small (compared to other media), so it doesn’t hurt to get both 🙂

April 2017 Kindle First Choices are out, pick one out of six

It’s a new month, and April Fools Day to boot, but this post is no Fools joke! It is a new selection of Kindle First e-books, where Prime members can select one of the six choices for FREE and also start reading them immediately. These are pre-release ebooks that will get released May 1st for most people. Non-Prime members can buy one of the six for $2 and read them right away as well.

FREE (no DRM) Book #1 of Stormlight Archive until Wednesday PM

This is a huge bang for the buck! A 600-page e-book is given away for FREE (and DRM-free) by Tor publishing. It is book #1 of a planned 10-part “Stormlight Archive” book series by Brandon Sanderson. Book #3 is coming out later in 2017, so the giveaway is go generate more interest in the book series and convert freebie-readers into life-long fans (Sanderson writes A LOT and he writes FAST). The book title is “The Way of Kings” – nearly 5000 reviews at amazon.com with a 4.7 out of 5.

This is an unapologetic fantasy book series but with very minimal sexual contest. To the point where the lack of sexual content requires more suspension of disbelief than the fantasy elements of the story 🙂

The giveaway ends Wednesday 3/24/17 night. It is open to US and Canada only due to publishing contracts and such. It is available without DRM in two formats, Mobi and ePUB. You can download both if you like. You have to enter your email address to get the giveaway. Tor is a very respectable entity, you don’t have to worry about abuse of your email.

March 2017 ebook options are up at Samsung Book Deals

Every month a number of places give out free e-books. The Kindle First program is not the only one. If you have a Samsung device that is eligible to participate in the Samsung Book Deals, and if you have installed the Kindle app from Samsung’s own app store (not Google Play, not Amazon’s app store), then you can head over to the “Book Deals” section of the app, and select one free ebook from a choice of four.

The March 2017 Tor e-Book Freebie is READY!

If you like to read FREE and DRM-free e-books, you have until March 13 in 2017 to scoop up the March 2017 freebie from Tor. The free book given away this month at their Monthly e-Book Club is “Shadow & Claw” by Gene Wolfe. You have to enter your email for this. After that you can download the book in ePUB (everybody else) and MOBI (Kindle). You can download both versions, you don’t have to select one of each.

These typically start earlier in the month, but for March 2017, they got a late start. But you still have the same amount of time (one week) to claim the freebie 🙂
