Cordcutter Deal at CVS this week with Gift Cards

If you are a cordcutter, there’s a great deal this week at your local CVS stores! If you buy $50 in plastic gift cards from Netflix or GooglePLAY or Xbox/Microsoft, their cash register will print just for you $10 in Extra Bucks. When you do the math, this is a virtual 20% off discount! Limit one per customer. Offer ends Saturday night when the stores close (5/27/17).

Neither Netflix nor GooglePLAY gift cards get discounted on a regular basis, so this is a great opportunity to score a prepaid discount. Or you can hold on to the gift cards and give them out as gifts in case of emergency ~ Dads and Grads are upon us after all 🙂

Another opportunity: Once you get the $10 Extra Bucks, then you can go for the $20+ in P&G products promotion at CVS. If you spend that much (finding things you need and/or on sale) will get you a new $5 in Extra Bucks. So you can daisy-chain the two offers 🙂

May 21-27: Buy $300+ in VISA Gift Card, Get $20 Staples Gift Card via EasyRebate

This recurring promotion is coming back at Staples brick and mortar stores for the shopping week of May 21-27 in 2017. The terms are as before, if you buy $300 or more in prepaid VISA gift cards (in a single transaction), the cash register will spit out (or email if you have email-only receipts) an EasyRebate offer that will get you a $20 Staples Gift Card after a few weeks. EasyRebates can be submitted online using data from the cash register receipt. You don’t have to mail anything or make any photocopies. Very easy.

As usual, this is profitable if you can get to $300+ with two gift cards (or in very rare cases if you can find one). That’s because each card has an activation fee which eats up your $20 bonus.

This offer is particularly good if you have a credit card that gives you 5% cashback on office supplies, such as some of the Chase Ink cards.

May 2017: Buy $50 Panera Gift Card, Get $10 Bonus for June

If you are a regular Panera fan, for the whole month of May 2017, they have a promotion at their B&M stores and their website. For every $50 in gift cards you buy, you will receive a $10 bonus gift card. The bonus gift card can only be used in June 2017. You can buy as many as you like, but keep in mind, the bonus $10 gift cards will all have to be spent in June 2017.

If you are near a Lucky’s store, and you like buying gift cards, they have a new promotion running until May 16 (2017) at their brick and mortar stores. If you buy $50 in participating gift cards, their cash register will spit out a coupon that gets you $10 off your next purchase at the Lucky’s B&M stores. You can buy up to $200 in gift cards per transaction.

Gift cards in this promotion are a mix of restaurants (Chilis, Applebees, Olive Garden, etC) along with major retailers (Sears, Kohls, Macy’s, GAP, etc).

Great Cordcutter Gift Card Deals at RiteAid with Plenti Rewards

Good until the close of business on Saturday April 15 in 2017, at Rite Aid brick and mortar stores, for those participating (or willing to join) the Plenti rewards program, there is a trio of loaded gift card deals for cordcutters!

  • Buy $50 Netflix Gift card, get 800 Plenti Points ($8 equivalent)
  • Buy $30 in Google PLAY or iTunes, get 500 Plenti Points ($5 equivalent)
  • limit two Neflix and limit two combination of iTunes and Google Play)

This is a very good deal, it’s an effective 16% discount on Netflix (you can load it up on your account in just a few seconds) and an effective 20% discount on Google Play (discounts are rare). It’s not a bad discount for iTunes, but sometimes you can find a 25% or 30% through store gift card promotions (Walgreens has a recurring buy $30+ in iTunes, get $10 Walgreens gift card, but it’s not running right now).

Bing Rewards: unlock a $5 Starbucks Gift Card offer

If you are participating in Bing Rewards, check your emails or account for a new promotion running until April 30 in 2017. If you make 30 or more searches during the month, you can unlock a $5 Starbucks Gift Card offer! You don’t get the gift card, you can unlock the offer to get the gift card. This may be a targeted promotion to encourage inactive Bing users to use it more often. YMMV since I have no way of checking how many others are eligible for this.

How to redeem the 99c movie rental promotion with the Google Play Office Depot promotion

Google Play has developed new “technology” when it comes to running physical gift card promotions. They run a promotion at Office Depot until 3/11/17 that got you the bonus of renting any Google Play movie for just 99c (eg you could use it for the $6 Arrival rental) IF you purchase a plastic physical Google Play gift card at Office Depot.

But the promotion does not print at the cash register. It gets linked behind the scenes to your specific gift card when you make the Office Depot purchase. This worked on all gift card options, I did this with a $10 gift card.

Staples 300/20 VISA offer returns March 12-18 in 2017

The VISA gift card promotion is making a comeback at Staples brick and mortar stores during the shopping week of March 12-18 in 2017. The terms are the same as before. You have to buy $300+ in VISA gift cards. Then you file an Easy Rebate (can be submitted online; nothing to mail in physically) and a few weeks later you will receive a $20 Staples gift card by mail. The rebate using data from your cash register receipt, so it’s easy to do (and works well for them too, since they can verify the purchase directly from the cash register data).

The strategy is the same as before, you have to get to the $300 amount using two or one gift cards. $300 gift cards are unicorns (hard to find), so the most realistic way is using one $200 and $100 VISA gift card. This will get you about $7 of profit, which is not bad for a $213 investment and a one month vesting period.

Plus, if you pay with a Chase INK credit card, you will receive 5% cashback on your credit card. Then you can use the VISA gift cards on items that would otherwise only get 1% credit card rewards.

TIP: sometimes they have gift cards throughout the store, hanging from the shelves – in addition to the gift card section. If you can’t find them in the gift card section, you may want to take a mini walk around the store for a little bit of a treasure hunt. Or ask the employees 🙂

Buy Google Play Gift Card ($10+), Get 99c Digital Movie Rental

At Office Depot and Office Max brick and mortar stores, until the close of business on Saturday 3/11/17, if you buy one of the plastic Google PLAY gift cards, you will receive a promo code that can get you a 99c movie rental on any movie available at Google Play. This is a pretty good deal if you want to rent new releases which go as high as $5.99 (eg Arrival). A $10 Gift Card is the minimum, which is still pretty good!

I haven’t done this offer yet. I will let you know how it goes. I will also check to see whether you can pay for this with Office Depot-Max Rewards or not (which would make it an even better deal).

20% off back in Plenti points with $25 Netflix Gift Card

Cordcutters, unite and take over! For the shopping week of Sunday February 12 until the close of business on Saturday February 18 (2017), at Rite Aid brick and mortar stores, you get 20% back in Plenti points when you purchase a $25 prepaid Netflix gift card. That’s 500 points, which have $5 buying power in future purchases at Rite Aid and other participating Plenti merchants. The promotion is limit two for the shopping week (as usual).

Given that Netflix is rarely discounted, this is pretty, pretty, pretty good! Plenti is free to join, and you can always spend your points on Exxon-Mobil gas if you don’t need anything else from the other participating merchants.

Just remember that Plenti points don’t roll, so don’t use points to buy items that qualify for new Plenti points. Use them on everything else 🙂

Buy $50+ in select Gift Cards, Get $10 off your next grocery purchase at Lucky’s

There is a very nice gift promotion at Lucky’s stores until 2/14/17 (yes, a Valentine’s Seasonal promotion). If you buy $50 or more from a list of eligible gift cards, which include Starbucks, Best Buy, Macy’s and Kohls), the cash register will print a coupon at checkout that gets you $10 off your next grocery purchase at Lucky’s stores. So you will pay full price for the gift cards. The list of eligible ones can be seen in the screenshot below:

You can get to $50 with any combination, one card from one retailer, multiple cards from the same retailer, or multiple cards from multiple retailers. If you plan to buy $100 or more, you may want to buy them in two separate transactions, so you can get two $10 off coupons.

“Next purchase” means you can turn around after buying the gift cards and start shopping groceries to spend the $10 coupon right away. You don’t have to come back at a later day. Even if you don’t need/want to buy anyone else a gift card, you can use these yourself. For example, you can load the Starbucks card into the app, and it will spend itself in Cascara Lattes and the like 🙂

Google Play Gift Cards Plenti promotion returns

Good news if you are a fan of Google Play and are participating in the Plenti rewards program! The gift card offer returns for the shopping week of January 29 until the end of day on Saturday February 4 in 2017. It is the usual terms, you purchase a $25 Google Play gift card at Rite Aid B&M stores, and receive 500 Plenti points, which are worth $5 towards future purchases (at Rite Aid or Exxon-Mobil or Macy’s or other participating retailers). The 500 points will show up in your Plenti account the next morning, so it’s quick and you don’t have to lift a finger to get your reward. Doing the math, this is a 20% virtual discount.

As before, the promotion is limit two per Plenti rewards member for this promotional period. Unlike iTunes gift cards that get discounted often, Google Play is not as often, so these are perhaps the best deals of them (as long as you are a Plenti member or you don’t object to joining in).

For the shopping week of Sunday January 29, until the close of business on Saturday February 4 in 2017, you can get 20% off on GAP gift cards at Staples brick and mortar stores. GAP gift cards can be used at their family of companies (including Banana Republic and Old Navy). The sale is automatic at the register, you don’t need a coupon, you don’t need a rebate!

Lucky’s: Buy $50+ in select Gift Cards, Get $10 coupon to use in future purchases

Until December 27 in 2016, at Lucky’s grocery stores, they have two parallel promotions on gift card purchases. If you buy $50 or more of those gift cards, the cash register will print a $10 coupon that you can use on your next $10+ purchase at Lucky’s stores. You have to buy gift cards from the same group – it could be $50 in a single card or two of them or any combination that gets you to $50+.

NOTE that gift cards may have to be purchased with cash or a debit card, as more and more retailers shy away from purchases of gift cards with credit cards. It reduces the retailers’ risk, but you miss out on credit card rewards 🙁
