Google Play: Half off a digital Movie purchase

While putzing around Google Play, be on the look out for a new promotion that gets you half-off the digital purchase (not rental) of a movie. The offer shows up when you are wondering about. You have to click the “Redeem Now” in the app. Once you do, the offer will show up in your Google Play account under the “Account” category, further down under the “Rewards” section. You can see them all there, and they include the expiration date too.

A screenshot from an Android smartphone is shown below:

50% off Google Play Movie Rental (YMMV)

In addition to the previosuly mentioned 20% off purchase promotion, Google Play is also running another promotion you may see in your emails or while browsing around their website or Store on an Android device, you get 50% off when you rent a digital movie of your choice. Strategically this is a great promotion for newly released movies which have insane rental price of up to $6 or $7. The offer ends 1/22/17 if not used.

YMMV as usual as to whether it is offered on your account, since I have no way of testing this for everyone…

GOOGLE PLAY TIP

If you tend to forget about these offers after you add them to your account, you are not the only one. I do too. However, you can easily find them in your Google Play account, go to the Account section in the left sidebar if you are using a web browser, and page down to the Rewards section. You will see all the activated offers there with the expiration date prominently displayed. Here’s a screenshot example below:

20% off one movie (digital purchase) at Google Play

If you are using Google Play, check your emails or notifications or navigate the store to see if you are eligible for this automated promotion, it gets you 20% off the digital purchase of a single movie of your choice until 11/30/16. This happens automatically in the cart there after you click on the promotional link. There’s no coupon code to manually enter. You will see during checkout whether your order will qualify or not for the promotional discount. Here’s a screenshot explaining the terms:

Nov 20-26: Buy $25 Google Play Gift Card, Get 500 Plenti points back

The Google Play gift cards are not discounted as often as iTunes, so it’s a sale-a-bration when they do! And they do indeed for the week of November 20-26 (in 2016) at Rite Aid brick and mortar stores. You buy a $25 Google Play plastic gift card, and receive 500 Plenti points, which have the $5 equivalent buying power in future purchases. The points will be ready to use in your account the morning after the purchase. Limit two per customer during this week. You get confirmation all is well at the cash register receipt. So this is a virtual 20% off discount ~ assuming you’ll have no issue spending the 500 Plenti points 🙂

Google Play Gift Card Offer Returns to Rite Aid October 9-15 in 2016

If you are participating in the Plenti Rewards program and you want to stock up on Google Play gift cards, we have good news for you! For the week of Sunday October 9 until the close of business on Saturday the 15th in 2016, at Rite Aid brick and mortar stores, we have the return of the Google Play Gift Card promotion!

The terms are the same as the previous times. You buy a $25 plastic Google Play Gift Card and receive 500 Plenti points. You can verify this by looking at your cash register receipt. It shows the 500 pending points there. You can spend your new points the next day, so you don’t even have to wait that long. 500 Plenti points have the buying power of $5 at Rite Aid, Macy’s, Exxon-Mobil gas stations and the like, so it’s essentially a 20% off discount on the Google Play gift cards that rarely get discounted. The usual limit of two per customer during this promotional week applies.

DID YOU KNOW that you can now use your Google Play gift card balance to automatically play for the Google Music subscription service? You just have to select it from your Google account settings and it will keep using the balance every month until it runs out. With the discount inherent in this offer, you are essentially getting the $10/month music service for $8 per month. This subscription also includes the “YouTube RED” subscription automatically (you have to be logged on to YouTube with the same google account obviously). And you can load thousands of your own songs into the cloud, so both the subscription and your personal collection are blended together, you don’t have to remember what’s where (there are still some artists that are not available in streaming service, plus there is music that is offered directly by the artists, or by new and upcoming artists that is not available in streaming services yet).

YMMV $2 Google Play eBook Credit

Google Play is more subdued in their offers than other online stores, but they have some offers flying the radar. Case in point, if you are subscribed to their emails (or wondering about within the Play Store), until September 30 (2016), you can opt-in for a $2 credit to be used towards your next e-book purchase until that date. If you are subscribed to their emails, look for this at the bottom of one of their recent emails (screenshot below):

google_play_ebook_credit

Or you can wonder about the Play Store, the offers are usually buried somewhere there within…

But that’s not all, you can verify that the offer has been added to your account by going to the “Account” part of the Google Play store and paging down to the “Rewards” section. There you will see all the active offers on your account. Here’s a screenshot of mine:

Rite Aid with Plenti: 500 points back on $25 Google Play Gift Cards

The Google Play offer is back at Rite Aid using the Plenti rewards program and this is probably the best way to get a discount for Google Play store credit at the moment. The offer is the same as before, you buy a $25 Google Play gift card at Rite Aid stores, and you receive 500 Plenti points ($5 equivalent on future purchases). The points are ready to use in your Plenti account the next day. As usual, the offer is limit two per customer for the week of September 18-24 in 2016.

PS: if you are not familiar with Plenti rewards, check our explainer post.

20% off Digital Movie Purchase at Google Play

Google Play is running a new promotion, you can get 20% off the purchase of one digital movie. The offer can be found through their emails, with a big hint in the email title, “Introducing Family Library with 20% off any movie purchase”. Or you may find it while browsing around the different sections of the semi-organized Google Play store 🙂

Screenshot of the popup below:

20off_gplay_movie

Once you manually activate the coupon on your account (you just have to press the button), it will be applied automatically to your next purchase. IF not used, it expires 8/31/16.

July 31 – August 6: Buy $25 Google Play Gift Card, Get 600 Plenti Points

This is the best Google Play gift card deal as far as I can recall. To get it, you have to be a member of the Plenti Rewards program (free to join) and be near a Rite Aid store when the offer is running. So here’s how it goes…

For the shopping week of Sunday July 31 until the close of business on Saturday August 6 in 2016, at Rite Aid brick and mortar stores, if you are a Plenti rewards member and buy a $25 plastic Google Play Gift Card, you will receive 600 Plenti points on your account. These are the equivalent of $6 in future purchases at Rite Aid or Exxon-Mobil gas stations or Macy’s or other participating retailers. You can’t convert the points to cash, but the have the equivalent spending power. If you do the math, that’s a 24% off effective-discount assuming you’ll have no problem spending the Plenti points.

Better yet, this is a “limit 2” promotion for the whole week, so you can get two $25 gift cards and score 1200 in Plenti points.

50% off one Google Play Movie Rental

Digital movie rentals can be insanely high for newly released for-rental movies, so coupons and special promotions are a good idea if you want to watch a new movie now, and not wait for it to make its way to Netflix or cable TV. Which brings us to Google Play, if you go to the Google Play store and look at the main offers there, one of them is a promotion that gets you 50% off the rental price of one movie. The promotion is good until 8/7/16. But once you rent the movie, you have the usual 30 days to watch it.

You should see something like this in Google Play (screenshow below):

half_off_google_play_movie_rental

You must first add the offer to your account, and then their checkout system will automatically apply the discount when you try to rent an eligible movie. There is no coupon code to enter, just add the offer to your account. If you have multiple Google accounts on your device, make sure you add it to the correct account!

Great Plenti Gift Cards deals at Rite Aid 6/19 to 6/25/16

If you are part of the Plenti Rewards program [see our TL;DR if you are not familiar with it], there are some hot gift card deals running there between Sunday 6/19/16 AM and Saturday 6/25/16 PM. The two best offers are:

  • Earn 500 Plenti Points on $25 Google Play Gift Card (limit 2)
  • Earn 800 Plenti Points on a $50 eBay Gift Card (limit 1)

That’s a 20% discount on Google Play and a 16% off discount on eBay. Both are pretty good discounts, especially considering these too are rarely discounted. Unlike iTunes that has discounts all the time. Plenti is a pretty good program, and if all else fails, you can redeem your points at Exxon-Mobile gas stations since almost everyone needs to refuel their cars.

Buy $25 Google Play Gift Card, Get 500 Plenti Points

Unlike iTunes Gift Cards, Google Play gift cards are rarely discounted, so this is a good opportunity to scoop them up at a good discount. This promotion is available through the Plenti rewards program at Rite Aid stores. You purchase a $25 physical plastic Google Play Gift Card, and receive 500 points in your Plenti Rewards program. This offer ends at the close of business on Saturday April 30 in 2016 at Rite Aid brick and mortar stores.

riteaid_google_play_gift_card_plenti

500 points have the buying power of $5, which you can spend in future purchases (the morning after your purchase) at Rite Aid or Exxon-Mobil gas stations or Macy’s or other participating locations.

I haven’t seen the weekly Rite Aid ad this week, but these promotions are typically two per customer during this week, so that’s pretty good. Google Play Gift Cards can be used on Apps, Music, Video, and eBooks purchases through the Play store. NOTE: they cannot be used to purchase subscriptions (eg Google Play Music All Access) or hardware from the Google non-Play Store.

PS: if you are not familiar with the Plenti rewards program, check our introductory post.

PS2: these are a great way for cordcutters to buy Season Passes for their favorite TV shows. Amazon rarely discounts their gift cards since they sell at pretty much face value in the used gift card market.

[DEAD] Cordcutter Deals until Sat PM: $10 back on $50+ Netflix, $6 back on $30+ Google Play

This particular promotion expired, but Rite Aid has Plenti Gift Card promotions almost every week. Some of them are better than others ~ partially depending on which ones are your favorite stores 🙂

Buy $25 Google Play Gift Card, Get 500 Plenti Points (limit 2)

We have a little bit of a cordcutter theme today! If you are an Android user, the Google Play Plenti Gift Card promotion is coming back at Rite Aid stores during the week of January 31 until the close of business on Saturday 2/6/16. You buy a $25 Google Play Gift Card and you receive 500 Plenti points. That’s the equivalent of $5 you can use in future purchases at Rite Aid, Macy’s, Exxon-Mobil, and more.

It’s essentially a 20% off discount on everything you buy at Google Play using this amount. Unlike iTunes (a bit ironic considering Apple’s crazy profit margins), Google Play rarely has sales on their gift cards. So this is a good opportunity.

The promotion is “limit two” during this promotional period. I’ve done this a couple of times in the past, and it works like clockwork. A pretty good way to buy Season Passes for TV shows if you are a cordcutter, or any other digital content (apps, music, ebooks, movies, etc) from Google Play.

NOTE: Google Play Gift Cards CANNOT be used to purchase hardware from the Google Store or subscriptions through Google Play (eg their Music service). Those have to be charged to a credit card. I don’t know why they have this restriction, probably to keep us spending more, because if a subscription or hardware purchase empties your gift card balance, you are less likely to make digital content purchases?

NOTE #2: if you are not familiar with the Plenti Rewards program, check our earlier introductory post.

50% off one MP3 Album on Google Play (limited time)

In parallel with their TV Season discount, Google Play also offers a limited time 50% off discount on the regular price of one MP3-album purchased at Google Play. You have to locate the offer using the Google Play app or using a web browser. You simply opt-in by clicking the “Continue” button

googleplay_50off_music_album

Once you add it to your account, you have until 12/2/15 to take advantage of it. This is particular of interest if you want to purchase music that is not available on streaming service, for example, Adele’s new “25” album! Once added, the offer appears in the “Rewards” section of your Google Play “My Account” section. This is a screenshot using a web browser to do so:
