Two Months of HBO Now with Roku activation

Roku is running a promotion that gets you a two months of HBO Now for FREE when you activate a new condition Roku player by October 1st in 2016. Typically HBO Now offers a free 1-month subscription. The subscription goes for $15 per month, so this promotion is a $15 value. You can cancel at any time as usual.

It’s no coincidence that this promotion started after Season 6 of Game Of Thrones ended 🙂 That’s one way to balance the subscriber numbers with the seasonal HBO viewers cancelling after the season finale!

More details on this promotion, including restrictions and deadlines can be found at the Roku website.

Speaking of Roku, the 2015 Roku 3 (with Voice Search, model 4230R) is on sale for $80, in new condition, at amazon.com by Amazon actual. They also have bundles with an HDMI cable and a mount.

NOTE: the refurbished option you see there is NOT eligible for the 2-month HBO Now promotion!

20% on new Roku if you have a registered Classic (old Roku player made from May 2008-2011)

If you have one of the older Roku boxes, what they call a “Classic” Roku box, made between May 2008 and May 2011, you may qualify for a 20% off discount towards the purchase of a new Roku box. The dates are manufacturing dates, not purchase dates. The reason for this is that Roku will no longer actively develop or update the older players, so they are trying to encourage customers to upgrade.

IF you are eligible for this offer, check the email address you used to register that old Roku box. They will have sent an email with this title: “Important notice for owners of classic Roku players (made before May 2011).”

Both the coupon code and the url found in the e-mails are unique to each email subscriber, so you can’t use the coupons unless you have been sent one.

The Classic Roku players that will no longer be updated are:

  • Roku HD (2000C), Roku HD (N1100), Roku HD-XR (N1101, N1000)
  • Roku XDS (2100X), Roku XD (2050X)
  • Roku SD (N1050)
  • Netgear XDS (NTV270), Netgear XD (NTV250)

You can find the relevant parts from that email pasted/posted after the jump…

Roku 3 (second generation) for $90, first generation for $80

If you don’t need the voice search feature on the remote control, the first generation Roku 3 streaming box is now down to $80 at amazon.com. This is plenty fast for video streaming purposes, flying over the menus compared to some of the older Roku streaming boxes. The voice search feature is accessible through the Roku mobile apps anyway if you want to see that. But if you prefer the latest model, the second generation Roku 3 is also on sale, going for $90, down from the starting price of $100.

[DEAD] Roku 3 drops to $77 (new condition)

As of 3/17/15, the price is $90. However, the price has been jumping around recently, so it may drop again. With the good old Apple TV dropping under $70, and the Roku 3 being two years old (see Wikipedia for timeline and feature comparison), there’s bound to be price volatility.

Regardless, if you can’t wait for the new condition price to go on sale again, you can get it certified refurbished for $73.

NOTE: with the HBO Now announcement with a three month Apple exclusive in terms of streaming boxes, and no published plans yet (see FAQs) for other boxes, it may be a tricky decision to figure out what to do. On the other hand, from a cord cutter perspective, buying a streaming box costs less than one month of a cable TV subscription, perhaps even half if you got hogtied into a “Triple Play” in order to get a decent price initially when you signed up. But that’s a story for another day…

Want to be a cord cutter and at the same time support smaller independent companies instead of big cable and big corporate? The current Roku flagship, the Roku 3, is on sale for $77 (was $85.50) with free shipping at Amazon.com by Amazon actual.

Among other features, it has wired Ethernet connection (in addition to Wifi), microSD slot for extra storage, and USB input for personal content. Its remote control has a headphone input, another nice feature.

Price updated on 3/17/15.
