Walgreens Rewards: now earn 10 points for almost every purchase (must opt-in)

Walgreens added a new twist to make their Rewards program more lively and interesting. This new offer requires a manual opt-in. Check your emails from earlier this week for the offer, or wait for the coupon in the Walgreens circular ad in-stores (or the Sunday papers) for Sunday May 31 in 2015. This new offer gets you 10 points for almost every $1 spent at Walgreens. The usual exceptions apply per the various federal and state laws. You also don’t earn rewards if you use rewards to pay for something. Other than that, it looks like almost everything else gets rewards.

Now before you get too excited about this “10 points per dollar”, keep in mind that in the Walgreens Rewards program, 10 points are the equivalent of one cent ($0.01), so basically this new offer is 1% reward of your purchase. In other words, if you buy $100 of makeup, you will get 1000 points, which are the equivalent of $1 in rewards.

Still, before this, we earned 0% on general purchases, so more points, even little by little, are better than no points 🙂

After you sign-up via their email or website or using the in-store coupon, this perk will show under your Walgreens.com Balance Rewards Summary page. There we learn that this promotion is good until the end of 2015. So nice! Just make sure you don’t accidentally press the “Cancel perk” thing! A screenshot of the Dashboard is right below:

This gets more interesting if you are a Walgreens Power shopper or if you do a combination of general purchases and specially-marked reward promotions. That’s because with their program, the more points you stock up, the bigger your reward redemption gets. The best redemption is 40,000 points for a $50 reward. In other words, instead of the usual 1%, this is the equivalent of a 1.25%. See screenshot below:
