20% on new Roku if you have a registered Classic (old Roku player made from May 2008-2011)

If you have one of the older Roku boxes, what they call a “Classic” Roku box, made between May 2008 and May 2011, you may qualify for a 20% off discount towards the purchase of a new Roku box. The dates are manufacturing dates, not purchase dates. The reason for this is that Roku will no longer actively develop or update the older players, so they are trying to encourage customers to upgrade.

IF you are eligible for this offer, check the email address you used to register that old Roku box. They will have sent an email with this title: “Important notice for owners of classic Roku players (made before May 2011).”

Both the coupon code and the url found in the e-mails are unique to each email subscriber, so you can’t use the coupons unless you have been sent one.

The Classic Roku players that will no longer be updated are:

  • Roku HD (2000C), Roku HD (N1100), Roku HD-XR (N1101, N1000)
  • Roku XDS (2100X), Roku XD (2050X)
  • Roku SD (N1050)
  • Netgear XDS (NTV270), Netgear XD (NTV250)

You can find the relevant parts from that email pasted/posted after the jump…

We’re writing to you as a valued longstanding customer and owner of a “Classic” Roku player,* made between May 2008-May 2011. We want to let you know about some important service changes for “Classic” Roku players.

In pursuit of building the best streaming experience possible, we’ve progressively made major advancements in our streaming platform and launched many new channels since Classic Roku players were first sold. Streaming technology has evolved, and so have our Roku streaming players.

Over time, our channel partners have also chosen to focus their development efforts on the latest generation of Roku streaming players. Some of our channel partners have even decided to stop supporting Classic Roku players altogether. This means that some channels will no longer be available on your Classic Roku player as time goes on.

Classic Roku players are not able to perform like the current generation of streaming players available today and have a more limited channel selection. As a result, we have made the difficult decision to no longer launch new streaming channels, update existing channels, push firmware updates, or develop the Roku mobile app for Classic Roku players.

You may be happy to keep streaming on your Classic Roku player. However, as a loyal customer, we want you to have the best streaming experience we can offer. Therefore, we invite you to upgrade to a new Roku player with a customer-exclusive 20% discount off our retail price (players start at $39.99 after discount): Learn more here.

Please note that if you already own a newer Roku player, made after May 2011, those players are not affected.
