50% off your first audiobook at Google Play

While surfing around on Google Play, I saw a giant banner that says get 50% off your first audiobook purchase through Google Play! The giant banner points to an audiobook url, which, as of the time of writing, is not ready yet. It’s possible that the banner went live before the audiobooks page got fully setup, so this serves as a heads up ~ if nothing else.

This looks like it would be a formal audiobook store, similar to iTunes and Audible. Google Play has been selling a small number of audiobooks under the Music store. These were mp3-audiobooks. I do not know if the new proper audiobooks will also be mp3, or will be some kind of a DRM format to please the publishers.

Connect Two Services to Movies Anywhere, Get FIVE FREE MOVIES

A new movie library syncing and playback service expanded out of Disney’s Movies Anywhere. It’s the new Movies Anywhere service that includes Disney along with four other major studios (Sony, WB, 20th Century, Universal).

Movies purchased on Vudu, iTunes, Google Play and Amazon Instant Video, or Digital Copy or Ultraviolet movies redeemed through those services, from those participating studios, are now able to get synced across those services and also into the Movies Anywhere app/service. (which can also play those movies by the way – unlike that darned Ultraviolet mess).

We have for you a step by step guide, with some screenshots too, on how to setup and connect Movies Anywhere. If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment here or there.

For a limited time, in an attempt to encourage more people to sign up for the service, Movies Anywhere is offering up to five free movies if you connect one or two services to it.

MP3 Audiobook: “No Time to Lose” by Pema Chordon for $9.49

If you prefer to get audiobooks in DRM-free mp3 format (instead of the DRM of Audible), you can get the audiobook “No Time To Lose” by Pema Chordon for just $9.49 on Google Play. This runs over 12 hours long. The mp3 files are organized in audio CD format, each audio CD is transferred to a single mp3 file, so you get 11 hourlong+ (on average) mp3 files.

This is not narrated by Pema Chodron, but by a Better Listen narrator. It is a reading of this ebook which averages 4.6 out of 5 based on nearly 80 customer reviews at Amazon.

Unless you have free Audible credits, this is a very very good price for the audiobook!

Another $5 off Google Play Books promotion is up!

Google does not have an e-ink e-reader and does not have a modern tablet in its line-up, except for the variations on a PixelBook theme. So they have to work extra hard to convince hardcore e-book readers to buy and read ebooks off their service.

Which is perhaps one of the reasons why they have the recurring promotion that gets you $5 off an eBook purchase of $5+. A new promotion just went live, good until mid-January 2018. This is separate from the existing promotion that runs until October 12 (2017).

Buy Two Google Play Gift Cards, Get $5 Walgreens Gift Card

Good until Saturday night 7/22/17, at your local Walgreens brick and mortar stores, you can get a free $5 Walgreens gift card, if you purchase any two Google Play, or NIKE or Spa Week gift cards. This is promising because there are $10 Google Play gift cards, so you can pay $20 (two $10 gift cards) and get a $5 Walgreens gift card.

Assuming you have no problem spending the Walgreens gift card, that’s a $5 return on a $20 investment, a 25% return or virtual discount, however you want to account for it! You need to be a Walgreens rewards member, which is free to join.

I don’t know how many of these you can do during this week. I haven’t done this yet, but I’m planning to do this (unless I forget).

How to get a discount on an HBO Now Subscription

For cordcutters, HBO has a rather generous 30-day free trial, but once they hook you in, then their monthly fee is $15, which for some may be too much, especially if you don’t watch every show and high profile movie they offer there. So, is there a way to get a discount for that?

The answer is YES, but it is an indirect way of getting a discount. You sign-up and pay for your subscription through GooglePLAY. Why GooglePLAY? Because they allow you to pay for monthly subscriptions with your gift card balance. You don’t have to pay with a credit card or debit card.

GooglePLAY offer: 20% off first three months of Showtime

Showtime is the home of the new Twin Peaks. If you want to climb aboard the Agent Cooper hype train, the Google PLAY store is running a promotion for Showtime, you get 20% off the monthly subscription fee for the first three months of your subscription. This is for subscriptions through the Showtime app, downloaded from Google Play. Once subscribed, you can use your Showtime credentials to login from other devices and systems.

I haven’t done this offer, so I don’t know how it goes from there. There’s only so much TV I can watch 🙂

GooglePLAY: rent any movie for $1.50 [HD, No Ads]

The offer runs until July 8, 2017. If you don’t use it, it expires. You can use it for one movie, It will get discounted automatically, and you will see the discount before you pay for the rental. You can also verify that the offer is in your account by going at the “Account” part of your GooglePLAY and looking under “Rewards”:

Cordcutter Deal at CVS this week with Gift Cards

If you are a cordcutter, there’s a great deal this week at your local CVS stores! If you buy $50 in plastic gift cards from Netflix or GooglePLAY or Xbox/Microsoft, their cash register will print just for you $10 in Extra Bucks. When you do the math, this is a virtual 20% off discount! Limit one per customer. Offer ends Saturday night when the stores close (5/27/17).

Neither Netflix nor GooglePLAY gift cards get discounted on a regular basis, so this is a great opportunity to score a prepaid discount. Or you can hold on to the gift cards and give them out as gifts in case of emergency ~ Dads and Grads are upon us after all 🙂

Another opportunity: Once you get the $10 Extra Bucks, then you can go for the $20+ in P&G products promotion at CVS. If you spend that much (finding things you need and/or on sale) will get you a new $5 in Extra Bucks. So you can daisy-chain the two offers 🙂

Great Cordcutter Gift Card Deals at RiteAid with Plenti Rewards

Good until the close of business on Saturday April 15 in 2017, at Rite Aid brick and mortar stores, for those participating (or willing to join) the Plenti rewards program, there is a trio of loaded gift card deals for cordcutters!

  • Buy $50 Netflix Gift card, get 800 Plenti Points ($8 equivalent)
  • Buy $30 in Google PLAY or iTunes, get 500 Plenti Points ($5 equivalent)
  • limit two Neflix and limit two combination of iTunes and Google Play)

This is a very good deal, it’s an effective 16% discount on Netflix (you can load it up on your account in just a few seconds) and an effective 20% discount on Google Play (discounts are rare). It’s not a bad discount for iTunes, but sometimes you can find a 25% or 30% through store gift card promotions (Walgreens has a recurring buy $30+ in iTunes, get $10 Walgreens gift card, but it’s not running right now).

How to redeem the 99c movie rental promotion with the Google Play Office Depot promotion

Google Play has developed new “technology” when it comes to running physical gift card promotions. They run a promotion at Office Depot until 3/11/17 that got you the bonus of renting any Google Play movie for just 99c (eg you could use it for the $6 Arrival rental) IF you purchase a plastic physical Google Play gift card at Office Depot.

But the promotion does not print at the cash register. It gets linked behind the scenes to your specific gift card when you make the Office Depot purchase. This worked on all gift card options, I did this with a $10 gift card.

So in order to redeem the offer, you go to your Google Play account and redeem the gift card the same way you do always. When you do…

Buy Google Play Gift Card ($10+), Get 99c Digital Movie Rental

At Office Depot and Office Max brick and mortar stores, until the close of business on Saturday 3/11/17, if you buy one of the plastic Google PLAY gift cards, you will receive a promo code that can get you a 99c movie rental on any movie available at Google Play. This is a pretty good deal if you want to rent new releases which go as high as $5.99 (eg Arrival). A $10 Gift Card is the minimum, which is still pretty good!

I haven’t done this offer yet. I will let you know how it goes. I will also check to see whether you can pay for this with Office Depot-Max Rewards or not (which would make it an even better deal).

Google Play Gift Cards Plenti promotion returns

Good news if you are a fan of Google Play and are participating in the Plenti rewards program! The gift card offer returns for the shopping week of January 29 until the end of day on Saturday February 4 in 2017. It is the usual terms, you purchase a $25 Google Play gift card at Rite Aid B&M stores, and receive 500 Plenti points, which are worth $5 towards future purchases (at Rite Aid or Exxon-Mobil or Macy’s or other participating retailers). The 500 points will show up in your Plenti account the next morning, so it’s quick and you don’t have to lift a finger to get your reward. Doing the math, this is a 20% virtual discount.

As before, the promotion is limit two per Plenti rewards member for this promotional period. Unlike iTunes gift cards that get discounted often, Google Play is not as often, so these are perhaps the best deals of them (as long as you are a Plenti member or you don’t object to joining in).
