54oz Carrington Farms Organic Coconut Oil beats Trader Joe prices

If you happen to live or travel near a Trader Joe, they have one of the best deals on coconut oil. A 16oz glass jar for $6. That’s pretty good since many of the organic unrefined you find elsewhere go for twice as much. But if you are a frequent users of coconut oil, you can get a better deal per ounce at Amazon. They have the 54oz Carrington Farms Organic Coconut Oil for $17. You don’t even need a calculator, because 48oz of Trader Joe (three jars) cost $18.

You can even save more if you use the “Subscribe and Save” which gets you 5% off or 15% off (if you have 5+ shipments in a single month). But even without the S&S discount, $17 is a pretty good deal. Now I haven’t tried the Carrington, but it’s doing pretty well in the reviews, 4.7 out of 5 with 1870 customer reviews. I have used the Trader Joe and it’s pretty good. I typically recycle the jars, so if you have no use for the jars, it’s not just cheaper and but also more environmentally friendly to get the 54oz container.

The “extra virgin” is a buzzword, but things to look for are “virgin”, “unrefined”, “cold pressed” and “organic”. Expeller pressed uses higher temperatures so it is less desirable. Cold pressed is not a refrigerator cold method, but it’s not as hot as the expeller. Refined is another thing to avoid unless you are not using it for eating and not putting it on your body. Having said all that, there are some differences of opinion in what exactly is ideal, so it’s up to you to decide where to draw the coconut line 🙂

TIP: if you are a first time buyer of coconut oil, keep in mind that its consistency changes depending on the temperature. It becomes solid at lower temperatures, and liquid at higher temperatures. It may seem unsettling at first, but that’s its nature.

TIP #2: do not flush coconut oil in the drain or sink or toilet. It solidifies when it’s colder, and may cause clogging. Remember, the temperature is your room is not the same as the temperature of the plumbing system, so you may be in the 80s in your room but the pipes may be in the 60s. The trash is a better way if you have no other option.
