Tor eBook Giveaway for June is Scalzi’s Old Man’s War

TOR (the publisher) has a monthly ebook freebie as well, but unlike Kindle First and the Samsung App Store freebie, it does not last the whole month. You usually have about a week to claim it once the giveaway goes live at the TOR ebook club page.

You have to enter your email and it is only available in US and Canada. You can then download the ebook for FREE without any DRM in the ePUB (almost everything else) and MOBI (Kindle devices). The book for June 2017 is a space-based science fiction classic, John Scalzi’s “Old Man’s War”. Get it! Even if you have the Kindle version, since this will let you read it anywhere DRM-free!

Subscribe to Hulu, Get $10 in Plenti points

If you are participating in the Plenti rewards program, and you are interested in starting a new HULU subscription (you haven’t been a Hulu member the last 12 months), you will earn 1000 Plenti points AFTER you pay for your first month of Hulu service. The Free Trial does not count since your rewards earning is triggered by YOU paying for your first paid month. Hulu is $8 per month for the ads tier and $12 per month without ads.

You must link your Plenti account with your Hulu account, so they can figure out that you satisfied the requirement and give you your 1000 Plenti points. 1000 points are the equivalent of $10 spent at RiteAid or Macy’s or Exxon-Mobil gas stations ~ certainly not hard to spend the points 🙂

This offer expires 8/11/17. They also run some other offers after you subscribe to Hulu, eg watch a specific number or type of TV shows and get bonus Plenti points.

Samsung Books FREEbies for June 2017 are out

It is June 2017 now, so don’t forget to scoop up your latest Kindle First freebie if you are a Prime member. And if you have an eligible Samsung hardware device, AND you don’t object to downloading the Amazon Kindle app from the Samsung app store (it is S-Pen friendly), for the month of June 2017, you can get one of the following ebooks below for FREE!

Unlike Kindle First which offers pre-release e-books, Samsung’s Book Deals offer previously released ebooks that are almost always part of the Kindle Unlimited (KU) program. So if you have a KU subscription, you already have access to all four of these.

Since these ebooks are already out, they have a lot of reviews each, so you can use the reviews scores and text to decide ~ if none of them “sings” to you 🙂

Weekend Sale: Arrival (Digital HD) for $5

For the weekend only, for Amazon Prime members only, the recent movie “Arrival” is on sale for $5 in Digital HD, without any ads at Amazon Instant Video. This is “digital ownership”, not a movie rental. You can watch it forever once you buy it!

This is a 2 hour movie, so you are paying $2.50 per hour, or 4c per minute. If you were buying movies like bulk food 🙂

PS: you only see the sale price IF you are logged on to your Amazon account AND you are a Prime member. Otherwise you will see the regular price.

Free University of Chicago eBook is now available!

A new month means more free ebooks are coming in. In addition to the previously mentioned Kindle First options, the University of Chicago monthly freebie is now up and running on their website. The book for June 2017 is “The Political Origins of Inequality: Why a More Equal World Is Better for Us All” written by Simon Reid-Henry. This was published in December 2015 and is 208 pages long.

Further down the page, they have a new coupon code, promo AD1611 gets you 20% off ebooks on their “Readers Catalog”.

NOTE that this is delivered by BiblioVault, and it is a DRM-ed e-book. You have to use an AdobeID to download it, which means downloading Adobe’s DRM crap. SAD!

KindleFirst choices for June 2017 are up: pick one of six as usual

Just like that, a new month has sneaked upon us, and that means, among many other things, that Prime members have a new selection of free pre-release e-books to pick from, as part of the Kindle First program.

So without further ado, here are the six choices for June 2017:

  • “Lost in Arcadia: A Novel” by Sean Gandert in Dystopian Fiction (because we always need more dystopia?)
  • “Wives of War” by Soraya M. Lane in Historical Fiction
  • “The Man of Legends” by Kenneth Johnson in Supernatural Thrillers
  • “Stillhouse Lake” in Psychological Thrillers by Rachel Caine
  • “The Man Who Could Be King: A Novel” by John Ripin Miller in Biographical Fiction
  • “Soho Dead (The Soho Series Book 1) by Greg Keen in Crime Fiction

None of the six “speaks to” right out of the bat, so I will wait a couple of weeks for customer reviews to pour in and use the reviews and overall scores as a guide 🙂

Samsung Book Deals for May 2017 are out (pick one from four)

Oops! I forgot to post this earlier in the month! The Samsung Book Deals for May 2017 are running, good until the last day of the month. As with before, you can pick one of the four available ebooks for FREE! Make sure the price shown is $0.00, otherwise you will be charged for it!

To get these, you need to have a Samsung hardware device that is eligible for this promotion, AND download the Kindle app from the Samsung app store (not GooglePLAY, not Amazon’s app store). The extra benefit of that app is that it is optimized for the S-Pen. Of note (no pun intended) if you have Samsung Galaxy Note phones and tablets 🙂

Some Samsung devices have this offer only for a limited time (eg 12 months after purchase), some devices are NOT eligible, while other devices are eligible for the lifetime of the device.

Regardless, all the ebooks offered through this are available through Kindle Unlimited as well, so you have another option to read them (if you are a KU subscriber that is).

My pick from this quartet was Drifters 🙂

The ebooks offered here are all previously released ebooks and they have plenty of reviews already in the Kindle store, so you can use a long list of reviews and ratings and comments to make your decision.

Samsung Book Deals is different from the Kindle First program which only offers pre-release ebooks (most of which ends up in Kindle Unlimited as well).

T-Mobile Tuesday on 5/30/17: Free Wonder Woman comic book and coupons

The T-Mobile Tuesdays for May 30 in 2017 has a Wonder Woman movie release theme! You get one FREE “Wonder Woman” digital comic book from DC, along with the option to buy “Wonder Woman” movie tickets for $4 each (instead of regular price). Details on which movie theaters or movie ticket purchasing services are participating will likely get revealed when the offer goes live. In the past they have offers with Fandango, so they could be the one (only a guess though!).

There’s also a Groupon coupon (say that ten times fast). The coupon is $10 off Group Local purchases. You cannot use it towards Goods (physical products). Groupon Local is the various restaurants and fun activities and massages and oil change places and ice cream places, and all that good stuff you can find if you *GASP* open the door and go outside 🙂

The teasers do not specify whether a minimum Groupon purchase amount is required. This will likely be revealed when the offers go live on May 30…

Illustrated Game Of Thrones Book #1 (hardcover) for $22

This book had been stubborn at $30, but we finally have some Prime-eligible discounts, it is the new illustrated hardcover edition of Book #1 of “Game Of Thrones” by George R. R. Martin. The current price is around $22 by a marketplace seller, in new condition, that is Prime eligible.

NOTE: Amazon has made a change recently. Before, they (Amazon actual) were the only ones that would get featured for books. Now, they have opened it up, and marketplace sellers can also get the spotlight position for books. This one is one such example. So pay attention to book listings as if they are listings of any other physical good sold at Amazon!

Buy 12 months of XBOX LIVE GOLD, Get 3 Months FREE

For a limited time, if you purchase a 12 month XBOX LIVE Gold Membership, you will receive a promo code for a FREE THREE month subscription. This is mentioned as a Bonus Offer on the Amazon product page linked to here.

The offer is only good for the digital purchase, sold by Amazon Digital Services LLC. Purchases of the physical keycard or gift card are NOT eligible.

Complete Series on DVD: Key and Peele for $24.51

One of the most underappreciated comedies of this century so far is the Comedy Central Key & Peele series (yes, the MadTV alums). If you missed out on it or want to watch and rewatch it, it is currently on sale as a DVD set for $24.51 at Amazon by Amazon actual. Limit one per customer during this sale. It is not however a lightning deal.

You get a total of 10 discs. The show ran for five seasons. You can get an episode list and airdates at the very useful and fast-loading epguides.com, a must-bookmark website if you are interested in TV shows!

Prometheus for $5 to own in digital HD

If you like to digitally-own movies, you can get the Prometheus movie in HD (without ads) for $5 at Amazon Instant Video. This is not a rental but “digital ownership”. You can watch it as much as you want as long as you want. But you can’t sell it or give it away to other people like you can with a DVD or Blu-Ray.

This is a limited time sale, but it’s not a lightning deal.

AMEX Offers: Spend $15+, Get $5 statement credit

The battles for cordcutters are heating up as more and more companies are offering LIVE TV plans now. Once upon a time, this was thought of as unthinkable. Now it’s raining options. One of the options, one of the first in the game, is SlingTV, having the lowest entry price for a basic plan ($20/month). And they are participating in the American Express offers…

If you spend $15+ on SlingTV, paid with your AMEX card of course, you will receive a one time $5 statement credit. So to get this offer, all you need to do is paying for a month of the service. As usual, you have to first activate the offer by adding it to your card (see screenshot above). And needless to say, the AMEX Offers website must needs offer this option to you, because some of this offers are targeted or YMMV or limited activation quantity.

LOTR Theatrical Trilogy for $10 on BluRay [limit 3]

Lord of the Rights time! If you like the theatrical editions of the trilogy, and you like the BluRay format, you can get those three movies on a BluRay set for $10 total at Amazon by Amazon actual. Limit three collections per customer during this sale. These are not the Extended editions with the bonus footage Petyr Jackson added later on. This is the version of the movies that was shown in the movie theaters (thus the “Theatrical”).

That’s almost 400 minutes, that’s almost a shift at work 🙂 So you are getting 40 minutes per $1, a pretty good value if movies were sold like food by the pound 🙂

Free Tor eBook Giveway for May: Zones of Thought Series book #1

A new month does not just mean a new Kindle First ebooks (free for Prime members), it also means a new free ebook from publishing house Tor which specializes in SFF (call it fantasy, science fiction, speculative fiction).

Unlike Kindle First, the Tor freebies don’t have a preset date, and once they are active, you only have about one week to claim them. But you don’t have to be a Prime member (all you have to do is enter your email address), and you can get the book DRM-free in either (or both) ePUB and MOBI (for Kindle reading) ebook formats.

The May 2017 ebook choice is “A Fire Upon the Deep” by Vernon Vinge. You can grab it at the Tor eBook Giveaway page. It is over 600 pages, so it’s not like you are getting a novella. It’s a “real” book 🙂

This is the first in a series of four under the “Zones of Thought” banner. Multiparters are often favorites in giveaways, to get you hooked on the whole series 🙂 This book averages 4.1 out of 5 based on 520+ customer reviews at amazon.com.
