Great way to get 20% off Netflix: Buy Gift Card and Earn Plenti points

Something very exciting is happening this shopping week at Rite Aid stores, running until the close of business on Saturday December 5 in 2015. There is a special on Netflix gift cards! If you purchase $25+ Netflix gift card, you will earn 500 Plenti points which are worth $5 in future purchases. That’s essentially a 20% discount. You can use this to start a new Netflix subscription or add it to your existing subscription. Their payment system will first use the gift card and once that is used up, it will continue charging your credit card.

The promotion is limit 2 during this week, which means you pay $50, you add $50 to your Netflix account (that’s around five months if you have the standard streaming plan), and have 1000 Plenti points added to your account and usable the very next day after 6am local time. This is an excellent deal!

Buy $100+ in select Gift Cards, get $15 off future Smart and Final purchase

If you buy gift cards often and like to shop at Smart and Final, they have a nice combination offer for you running until December 1st. You have to buy $100 or more in select gift cards (eight options) in a single transaction. If you do that, you will receive a coupon for $15 off a future purchase at Smart and Final. The $15 off coupon must be used by 12/15/15. Limit one $15 off coupon per transaction per customer per day, so you can do it multiple times if you like.

The eight gift cards eligible for this promotion are Macy’s, iHOP, Cold Stone Creamery, Panda Express, Olive Garden (aka Carbs Garden), Lucille’s, Darden family of restaurants and the “Dinner and Movie” gift card (Darden and Fandango combo). Diverse choices, considering you can use some of the gift cards yourself and use other as actual gifts. Or keep them around as “emergency gifts” until after the holidays are over 🙂

Nov 15-21: 20% back in Plenti points on $25 Google Play or $50 Best Buy Gift Cards

If you are a member of the Rite Aid Plenti Rewards program (see our introductory post on it), for the week of November 15-21 in 2015, at Rite Aid brick and mortar stores, you can get 20% back in Plenti points when you purchase a $25 Google Play Gift Card (you get 500 Plenti points; limit 2) or a $50 Best Buy Gift Card (you get 1000 Plenti points; limit 2). Only the specific amounts mentioned in their weekly circular ad are eligible for this promotion.

This is great either way, Google Play rarely gets discounted, unlike iTunes that can easily be found 20% to 25% off. And the Best Buy offer is pretty good as well.

The easiest way to redeem these Plenti points after they post to your account is towards future Rite Aid purchases or fill up your car at a participating Mobil-Exxon gas station.

Oct 25-31: Buy $300+ VISA Gift Cards, Get $20 VISA GC via Easy Rebate

Better wake up early on Sunday if you don’t want to miss this. The VISA Easy Rebate promotion is back at Staples brick and mortar stores for the week of October 25-31 in 2015. Its the usual offer, you buy $300 or more in prepaid VISA Gift Cards, and you receive $20 back via an Easy Rebate (submitted online). This time the $20 is a prepaid VISA gift card, not a Staples Gift Card, so you have more flexibility in where to spend it. This is limit one per household during this promotion week.

staples_VISA_promo_is_back

As before, this is a money maker deal if you can get to $300 with two or one VISA gift cards. The $300 unicorn is hard to find (although I saw it once!), so for most people, it’s gonna be a $200 + $100. The activation fees for these are $7 and $6 respectively. So you pay $300 + $13 at checkout, you go home, submit the Easy Rebate online, and 4-6 weeks later, you get a $20 prepaid VISA gift card by mail. So you make $7. That’s a 2.2% return on investment ($7 on a $313 investment) with a 1-month vesting period. Can your investment adviser beat this? 🙂

Oct 4-10: Buy $25 Google Play Gift Card, Get 500 Plenti Points

Google Play gift cards get nowhere near the discounts the iTunes Gift Cards get. So it’s a bit of a mini-event when there is a discount on the Play cards. One of the most consistent places to find a good deal is Rite Aid in combination with the Plenti rewards. This promotion returns every few weeks, so it can keep you stocked up on a regular basis.

The offer is as before, you buy a $25 Google Play Gift card, and receive 500 Plenti points. One point is the equivalent of one penny when redeemed, so 500 points is $5. Effectively a 20% off discount, assuming you can naturally spend the Plenti points at Rite Aid or other participating providers (if all else fails, you can use your Plenti points to pay for gas at Mobil-Exxon gas stations).

This offer is limit two for the week, so if you want to max-out, you pay and get $50 in Google Play credit, and have 1000 Plenti points for future use. That’s $10 to spend in the future at RiteAid or other participating providers.

Aug 30 – Sept 5: earn 20% Plenti points on $25 Google Play Gift Card

iTunes gift cards are discounted left and right (which is interesting considering Apple’s crazy profit margins), while Google Play gift cards rarely get discounts. But it appears Google is slowly but steadily “discovering” the magic of discounting. So for the week of August 30 to September 5 in 2015, at Rite Aid stores, if you purchase a $25 Google Play Gift Card, you will receive 500 Plenti points. These have a redemption value towards a future purchase of $5. So it is essentially a 20% off. This is a limit two offer for the week.

If you are not part of the Plenti program, it is free to sign-up in-store or online. I have a write-up of my sign-up experience (I was part of the RiteAid Wellness Rewards before).

TIP #1: if you are not a frequent Rite Aid shopper, there’s another easy way to redeem all your Plenti points: you can use them to pay for gas at Exxon-Mobil gas stations. Just slide your Plenti cards before you slide your credit card and follow the prompts at the pump’s display.

TIP #2: if you are a cordcutter, the Google Play gift cards are a good way to buy Season Passes of TV shows with this extra discount factored in. You can use these cards on anything digital at Google Play. However, Google Play gift cards cannot be used to purchase physical goods (hardware, phones, tablets, etc) or subscriptions.

Aug 30 – Sept 5: $20 Staples Gift Card via Easy Rebate with purchase of $300+ in AMEX Gift Cards

In an era of bubbles and bears, it’s hard to find a guaranteed 2% return on investment with a 30 day vesting period. But you can. For the week of August 30 until the close of business on Saturday September 5 in 2015, at Staples brick and mortar stores, if you purchase $300 or more in American Express gift cards, you qualify for a $20 Staples Gift Card to be delivered to you via Easy Rebate in about 4-6 weeks after your purchase. The Easy Rebate is submitted online, you don’t mail anything. Just enter information from your cash register receipt into the Staples rebate website.

You can get to $300 with two AMEX gift cards, with activation fees of $7 ($200 gift card) and $6 ($100 gift card). With the $20 Staples gift card factored in, you are making a $7 profit, a 2.33% return on investment.

If you haven’t done this before, here’s how it goes. You pay $300 + $13 in service fees at the register. You go home, submit the Easy Rebate (online; not mail-in rebate), and 4-6 weeks later you receive a $20 Staples Gift Card. Assuming you can spend or use or gift the gift card, you are coming ahead. You paid $313 at checkout and have $320 of buying power.

Reward Redemption Sale: 10% off select merchant Gift Cards (AMEX Membership Rewards)

If you are part of the American Express Membership Rewards program, and you have accumulated enough rewards points to be able to participate in this promotion, good until 8/31/15, you get 10% off in points needed to redeem rewards from select merchants, including the Staples, Pottery Barn and the GAP group of companies. Check your emails from AMEX or their Rewards website for more details.

Remember this offer is if you already have enough rewards in your account. This is not a general sale on the gift cards…

Aug 23-29: earn 20% Plenti points on Gift Card purchases for Bass Pro, Aeropostale or Bed Bath & Beyond

At Rite Aid stores, for the shopping week of August 23-29 in 2015, if you purchase a $50 Bed Bath and Beyond (BB&Y) gift card, you will receive 1000 Plenti points, which translate to $10 in future purchases. That’s effectively 20% discount, on top of any other discounts you get from coupons at Bed Bath when you start using your gift card. This is a limit two promotion for the week, so if you max out, you get a $100 BB&Y gift card, you pay $100 at Rite Aid, and 2000 points are added to your Plenti account.

In parallel, they have 20% promotions on Bass Pro and Aeropostale gift cards (500 points on $25 gift card), with a limit of two per card as well. You have to pay for the gift cards out of your pocket (not with Plenti rewards).

If you are not familiar with the Plenti rewards program, check our post describing the signing up process.

Costco members: Pay $80 Get $100 in Gift Cards from either Peets or Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf

If you are a Costco member, you can get great deals without even setting foot in the crowded and almost-always busy mega-stores. Case in point, their website has two gift card promotions with a nice 20% discount. You pay $80, and receive $100 in gift cards for either Peet’s Coffee or The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. You receive multiple gift cards (five from Peets, four from CBTL that total $100). These are “real” gift cards, not promotional codes, so they don’t expire and have the consumer protections of gift cards as set forth by your state and the retailer.

If you are not a Costco member, you can still purchase these, but you pay a 5% surcharge, so that’s $84 for $100, a 16% discount. Now if you are a regular Peet’s shopper, you have to trade it off with the in-store promotion where you get a free medium drink (of any kind) when you load or reload $25 to your gift card. If you use your freebie on a more expensive drink (eg $5), it comes out to about 20% off as well.

Aug 16-22: 800 Plenti Points with $50 Best Buy Gift Card

For the week of August 16-22 in 2015 at Rite Aid stores, you can earn 800 Plenti points (equivalent to $8 in future reward redemptions), if you purchase $50 or more in Best Buy Gift Cards. The promotion is limit two, so $100 in Best Buy Gift Cards get you $16 in future purchases (using the Plenti rewards). It is free to join their rewards program and you can also convert your previous Rite Aid Wellness rewards to the new one. See our earlier post on signing up for Plenti.

Aug 16-22: 20% off select iTunes Gift Cards

For the brick and mortar shopping week of Sunday August 16 until the close of business on Saturday August 22 in 2015, at Staples stores, you can get a 20% off discount on select iTunes Gift Cards, in the $100, $50, $30 and $25 denominations. Limit one per customer but since there’s no coupon or rebate, you can revisit and buy more.

Aug 9-15: 15% off Domino’s Gift Cards

If you are fond of Domino’s Pizza, you can essentially get an effective 15% off discount (in addition to future coupons and promotions) at Staples between August 9-15 in 2015. That’s because they have a 15% off sale on Domino’s Gift Cards. No coupons, no rebates, the gift cards are automatically discounted at checkout. Limit three gift cards per customer during this promotion. Here is a screenshot of the relevant promotion from their weekly ad:

Aug 2-8: Earn 500 Plenti points with $25 Google Play Gift Card [essentially 20% off!]

Unlike iTunes Gift Cards, so far, Google Play gift cards are rarely discounted (which is quite the contrast considering Apple vs Google practices, but that’s another story for another day). Which brings us to this offer for Rite Aid Plenti rewards members. For the week of August 2-8 in 2015, at their brick and mortar stores, you earn 500 Plenti points if you purchase a $25 Google Play Gift Card. Since 500 Plenti points translate to $5 in future reward redemptions, if you shop at Rite Aid (or other Plenti places) often, this is essentially a 20% off discount. This is a limit two promotion for the week.

You can use the Google Play gift card to buy almost everything at Google Play (music, apps, ebooks, movies, TV shows) but you cannot use it to purchase hardware or subscriptions (eg their All Access Music service) – they have to be paid with “real money”.

PS #1: they also have the same promotion for Aeropostale, American Eagle and Hollister gift cards.

PS #2: if you don’t have a Plenti rewards account, it’s free and simple to sign-up. You can even convert your existing Wellness+ account, which sort of hangs around but only applies to RiteAid house brand products. We have a detailed post on signing up for Plenti.

August 2-8: Buy $50 Xbox Gift Cards, Get $10 VISA via EasyRebate

For the week of August 2-8 in 2015, at Staples brick and mortar stores, according to their weekly ad, if you buy a $50 or more in Xbox Gift Cards, you can receive a prepaid $10 VISA gift card via Easy Rebate. Easy Rebates can be submitted online, so you don’t have to mail anything. Their rebates are very reliable as long as you follow the rules and don’t try any monkey business. The promotion is limit three during this promotional week.

xbox_staples_gift_card_offer

Since a prepaid VISA gift card can be used at just about any store, this is a great deal if you need Xbox gift cards or spend enough there.
