[DEAD] Watch for FREE: Season 1 of Outlander (Starz)

UPDATE (April 12, 2016) Since the original post, Starz launched their own standalone subscription option and updated their apps. The promotion mentioned below is no longer available.

You can still start a 7-day free trial (directly from the Starz apps or thru Prime) and if you don’t like it, you can cancel. It is a month-to-month subscription (like Netflix). Note that if you sign up through Prime, you don’t get a Starz account, you have to watch through Amazon’s own video apps (Instant Video, Web Browser, etc) and channels (Roku, FireTV, etc).

I believe some cable companies are having a weekend binge promotion that includes Starz (I think Comcast Xfinity) but I don’t know if that’s open to all or only their own customers or even further restricted to their TV subscribers.

Free PreRelease Animated Movie on Google Play: BLING

This is a bit strange, but for a limited time, Google Play is offering for FREE a pre-release movie. That’s right, the movie hasn’t come out in the theaters yet, but you can digitally own it for $0.00 on Google Play. This is an 81-minute animated movie called “Bling”.

It’s certainly one way to generated buzz about the movie, or perhaps apologize why Taylor Kitsch and Tom Green are voice-starring in it [meow!].

Feb 7-13: Free 500 Walgreens Rewards Points with FREE Blood Pressure Test

If you are active in the Walgreens Rewards program, there’s an easy way to earn 500 points. According to their Weekly Ad for February 7-13 in 2016 (see relevant parts of the screenshot right below), you get 500 points if you get a free blood pressure test.

walgreens_500_rewards_points

I am assuming this is the arm measurement type, so it should be quick and easy and painless. I will try to test it next week to see how it works. I don’t know if a pharmacist is necessary for this, or any other Walgreens employees – in other words, I don’t know how the 500 points are awarded, human intervention or automated?

NOTE: according to the ad there, this offer is not available in Arkansas, New York and New Jersey. I am going to guess it must be some kind of State Law prohibiting health-related rewards or something like that?

The Staples Free Reusable Bag and 20% off Fill The Bag Discount return Jan 24-30

The Staples free reusable bag coupon is back for the week of January 24-30 in 2016 at their brick and mortar stores. It’s the usual offer, you get a free bag (from the color choices they have available in store) and at the same time you get a 20% off discount on everyday office supplies you can fit inside the bag. These are two separate coupon codes that the cashier has to enter in their system. A lot of people do this, so usually the cashiers can do it quickly.

staples_free_bag_and_discount

The usual restrictions apply, you can’t use this on tech or gift cards or sale items and things like that. You can find all the restrictions on the coupon itself. You can preview this (before Sunday 1/24/16) by checking the “Upcoming Week” ad at the Staples website. If you are looking at this after that, it will be the default ad for the week.

So even if you don’t want anything else, scoring a free bag is good enough if you don’t have to go out of your way to get there. These are pretty good bags.

The January 2016 Samsung Kindle e-book choices are out

If you have a Samsung Galaxy device, depending on which one and when you bought it, you may be eligible for a free Kindle e-book per month, typically from a choice of four e-books, either for 1-year or as long as you have the device. The featured ebooks are almost always part of the Kindle Unlimited program, so if you are subscribed to that, that’s another way to get those ebooks.

To get them, you need to download the Kindle app from Samsung’s own Android app store. Not the Google Play, not the Amazon App store. But the one from Samsung, whatever name it has now – I think it’s Galaxy App store but who knows they may have changed it yet again ๐Ÿ™‚ Once you download it and login with your Amazon account, if you are eligible, one of the options in the left hand side menu are the Samsung Book deals.

TIP: do not get an ebook unless the price you see is $0.00. If the price is not $0, you will be charged! If you just signed up, wait for a few minutes for things to sync up or restart the app or the device to force a sync up.

Kindle First selections are available for January 2016 (six options!)

It’s a new month, and that means, among many other things, if you are a Prime member, you can a get a new free e-book before the rest of the world. January 2016 brings six different choices. You get one for free now. The rest of the books become available for everyone February 1st. They are all pre-release now. If you are not a Prime member, you can buy one of the six right now for $2.

The choices for January 2016 are mostly beginnings of new book series, four out of six of them are so. Here’s the list:

Free Pilot Episode in HD for Syfy’s “The Expanse”

Syfy’s new high profile TV series, “The Expanse”, based on the on-going book series by virtual author James S.A Corey will make its TV debut on December 14, but you don’t have to wait for that long, not only to watch but also own the first episode in HD. It is available (for a limited time) for FREE (as on $0.00 purchase) at Amazon Instant Video and M-Go and Google Play and Vudu. These are commercial-free and you can watch it forever.

You can also watch it on YouTube and Hulu and other places but there’s no guarantee it will remain there or that it will be for free in the future, so you are better off scooping it up while it goes for $0.00 at the above streaming services.

Season 1 will be composed of 10 episodes. For cordcutters, the Season Pass price is $20 in HD or $15 in SD. This is a complicated TV show, especially if one has not read the the books this is based on, so it’s not a bad idea to watch each episode 2-3 times (with subtitles on) until you become familiar with all the world-buildling and custom language and slang used.

Lucky Rewards members: FREE 2 Liter Dr. Pepper (expires 11/10/15)

Quite possibly the best benefit (and most unique) benefit of the Lucky’s Supermarkets rewards program is that every few weeks, they offer you a free item. An unconditional free item. No “buy this get that”, you just get it for FREE! A new promotion went out via email today, and this one gets you a free 2 Liter Dr. Pepper. As before, you have to manually add it to your Rewards card (one click from the email, and login if you are not already logged to your Lucky’s account).

drpepper_lucky

The free item is deducted automatically from your Lucky’s account when you make an eligible purchase. If you are using the self-checkout, it typically needs an employee to enter their numbers to verify the freebie, but they are typically hovering over self-checkout, so they are not hard to find.

This particular offer must be added to your account and redeemed by the end of day on 11/10/15 (Tuesday).

Still time to get the free Samsung October 2015 e-book (if eligible)

If you have an eligible Samsung Galaxy device, and you have installed the Galaxy app-store version of the Kindle app, every month, you are entitled to pick one free e-book from a choice of four options. You can pick it up at any point during the month, and it is yours to keep. Most of the books participating here are also part of Kindle Unlimited. This is a separate program from (and stackable with) Kindle First.

I forgot to post this earlier, but it’s better late than never, there’s still 50 hours left in October 2015 ๐Ÿ™‚ The options are, as you can see in the picture below:

samsung_ebooks_october_2015

TIPS

  • if the price in the Samsung Kindle app is NOT $0, it means you will pay for them. Make sure your device is eligible and synced and only get it if the price shown in $0…
  • … but if you accidentally get a non-$0 item, fear not, you can go to amazon.com/myk and request a refund
  • if you have an S-Pen device, there’s good reason to get the Galaxy app-store version of the Kindle app – it recognizes the S-Pen! For example, you can highlight or change pages using the S-Pen
  • you can run both the Samsung Kindle app and the Google Play one on the same device with the same account

FREE 12oz Bing Cherry Drink for Lucky Rewards members

More and more companies are attempting to dip into their “big data”, so a number of offers now may be targeted to segments of their customer base, not everyone. Which makes posting about them harder, since you can’t always tell whether it’s a “for all” or “for some” offer.

Which brings us to this new offer from the Lucky Rewards program. If you are a member, check your email for a new offer that gets you one FREE 12oz can of Bing Cherry beverage. You have to manually click on the “Add this offer to your account” and that’s it. You use your Rewards when you buy it, and their computer will automatically adjust the price. No coupon code needed.

lucky_rewards_free_bing_drink

You must add this offer to your account by October 13 (2015) and use it by that date!

With more and more rewards program going into more convoluted and twisted options (like Staples and the blended Office Depot-Max), which typically work against the average consumer, it is refreshing (no pun intended!) to see Lucky actually offer free products to their Rewards members without any complications or jumping through hoops. Needless to say, it’s not totally free, because they use the data from your Rewards account as food for their hungry “Big Data” creatures ๐Ÿ™‚

Kindle First for October 2015: pick one out of six options

Another month is in the books, and October 2015 is here. For the whole month, from the 1st until the last day, if you are an Amazon Prime member, you can select one FREE e-book from a choice of six. All are pre-release books that will become available to the general public on November 1st. But as a Prime member, you can pick one of those six, and start reading it right now.

If you are not a Prime member, you can pick one as well, but you have to pay $2 for it. So without further delay, here are the six options:

  • “The Mentor” by Rita Carla Francesca Monticelli, Aaron Maines in Mystery
  • “Life and Other Near-Death Experiences” by Camille Pagรกn in Contemporary Fiction
  • “This Is the Night” by Jonah C. Sirott in Literary Fiction
  • “Here & There” by Joshua V. Scher in Experimental Fiction
  • “Infinity Lost (The Infinity Trilogy Book 1)” by S. Harrison in Scifi Thrillers
  • “The Concealed (The Lakewood Series Book 1)” by Sarah Kleck, Michael Osmann, Audrey Deyman in Romantic Fantasy

Since you have until October 30th to make a pick, if you are not certain yet, you can wait for a few more days and monitor their reviews. In general, other things equal, the reviews can help you sift through potential gems and help you avoid potential disasters.

You can find links to all these selections at the Kindle First page. The selections at that page change every month.

September 2015 options are up for the Samsung eBook Deals

If you have a Samsung Galaxy device, depending on which device and when and how you purchased it, you may be eligible to a free e-book every month, from a choice of four options that change monthly. To get these, you must needs download the Kindle app from the Samsung Galaxy Apps store (not from Google Play or Amazon). On the plus side, this version works with the S-Pen. You can have both running side by side on your device (a bit awkward but works).

samsung_book_deals_september_2015

Anyway, the options for September 2015 are:

  • “The Thief Taker” by CS Quinn
  • “Where the Wind Blows” by Caroline Fyffe
  • “What Might Have Been” by Matt Dunn
  • “Dis Enchanted” by Robert Kroese
